I love the story about the matches! My parents were never well-off, and when several grandchildren arrived my mum couldn't afford to buy expensive toys at Christmas (she also thought they were a waste of money, to be fair!) She produced 'treasure chests' - a shoebox covered in Christmas paper and filled with an appropriate book for the child's age, or maybe a hand-knitted jumper, and lots of small 'stocking filler' presents, all wrapped individually. My nieces and nephews, now in their 40s, still talk fondly of those boxes - the expensive plastic toys, model kits etc have been long forgotten but the treasure chests stay in their memories as some of the best presents ever.
IQueen, sorry to hear about your SIL. It's a poignant reminder that money can't buy you health, love or friendship.Life is mainly froth and bubble: two things stand like stone. Kindness in another’s trouble, courage in your own.0 -
Feeling a bit fed up lately, it's been 2 weeks since I finished work and I don't start uni for another 2...despite all the cleaning and organising that's getting done I'm feeling bored and cooped up! I think I might bake a cake, that usually cheers me up and keeps me occupied.0

Kondo'd the second of our two children to the Southern Hemisphere yesterday, sadly for us.😓
Am keeping busy by tidying and kondoing.
Was cheered up by 4 yo GDD 'giving' us Timtams over the internet, and the 8 month old giving us huge gummy smiles and waves, don't you just love themCarolbee0 -
Afternoon all, sending love to you Iqueen, hope he gets good news.
Vjsmum brilliant job on the dresser, just my style;) if ever you kondo it :rotfl:
Tried to make outfits with clothes, but didn't really work! Don't know if I was in right mood, did manage to kondo a half bag for cancer charity that came through door.:j
Have been swimming the tinternet to see if I can spot some clothes to fit in with what I have, I always forget what I have got when I go in shops,so maybe this is the way forward for me!Focus on contribution instead of the impressiveness of consumption to see the true beauty in people.0 -
Just sorted out my jumpers, cardigans, trousers & underwear. I have a ridiculous amount of all of them! I got rid of very few cardigans and jumpers
I just love them all! Now that they're all folded neatly I don't actually have room for them all in their allocated cupboard space  so will have to sort something out! The drawer my trousers were in has collapsed (stuffed too many in there) so will have to see if OH can sort it out - I hate cheap Argos furniture!

Afternoon all.
Smoosh, we've successfully mended the drawers of argossy furniture using wood glue (EvilStick) and sash clamps - these are like regular clamps but are mounted on either metal or home made wooden lengths to streeeetch them the length/ width of the drawer. It's very difficult to reglue drawers without them, as you can't keep the pressure on until the glue dries without something to hold them together. HTH.
:T Love the sideboard, VJsMum (and I'm still coveting your remodelled wardrobe, btw. Nowhere to put a wardrobe, mark you, but coveting nevetheless).
Accidentally did some kondo-ing at t'office when something slithered off the back of my desk and went down by the wall. Crawled under my desk to retrieve it and found that there was also a lidless empty container which had once held screen wipes and a brochure of events in 2014.......:rotfl:Both are now in the recycling. Oh, the shame of it, the shame, I had no idea they were even behind there.:o
Booked onto a flu clinic today, yes, it must be autumn. Will get that kondo'd next month, could've had it on Saturday but only a clinic at a time where I had been committed to be elsewhere.
Tomorrow I kondo a water tank and get another one in its place. That will keep me tied to the homestead all day but I will aim to do bits and pieces which I have been putting off, some of which are kondoesque. I shan't jinx myself by listing them until they're done and dusted, just in case it doesn't work out. Don't think I shall be bored, though.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

Emptied my wardrobe again today - got rid of a pair of shoes, a pair of boots, 1 pair of trousers, 2 tops and a cardigan
There are still a handful of items about which I'm unsure, so some more may go another time. But also rearranged it so Autumn/ Winter clothes are towards the front and strappy Summery tops at the rear
Had all of our external doors and windows replaced this week - am thrilled with my new front door - looks fantastic - so although it's cost us £££££ they look brilliant - and hopefully the drafts won't be whistling through this Winter!!Joy abounds!!
Sorting m-I-l's stuff on-and-off - will be taking 2 full binliners of clothes to charity tomorrow. Still more to go through, but they were all the easy bits out of drawers (1 bag of which was for rags, as was underwear and tired PJs) Am trying to go through her photos in an easy rough first sort - one pile for us (pics of us/ our kids), 1 for OH's brother (him and his kids), 1 for his sister (her), 1 for OH's aunt (pics of her/ her and m-I-l, cousins) and 1 pile of mixed to be decided on another time (which will likely include all landscape and inanimate object and pet type pics as OH probably can't face throwing those just yet) I want some of those piles to go to the funeral/ wake so I can hand them out - they aren't local and none of them are close and we will just be left with them for all eternity if we're not careful .Sounds harsh, but I know what they are like - they will take the view that we a - own m-il's home and b- have a large house of our own - so therefore can just store everything somewhere without issue. Getting them to take a couple of photo albums home with them will cause enough hassle!
Having our windows changed means all windowsills had to be emptied - so nothing is going back on any of them without the joy factor being considered!!!I am the master of my fate; I am the captain of my soulRepaid mtge early (orig 11/25) 01/09 £124616 01/11 £89873 01/13 £52546 01/15 £12133 07/15 £NILNet sales 2024: £200 -
Good evening.
Yesterday I sorted out two bags ready for collection today. A pair of boots and two pairs of shoes belonging to DD2 that I couldn't find last time, two M&S skirt suits, one of which I had never worn and one that I wore once for an interview but was told afterwards by DD2 that it made me look like a hippie. Another more formal suit with both skirt and trousers all with tags attached. A dress and matching cardigan, and two skirts with tags and four more skirts.
Two glass fruit sets and some non-matching dishes, various stainless steel items including toast rack, sundae dishes, cruet sets, all wedding presents. What I found most difficult were some basket-work trays that my FIL had made forty years ago. I had to hide them from DH, so couldn't put them out until he had gone to work. I put one bag out and by the time I had gone upstairs to get the other one, the collection card had been put through the door. I called the number on the card and he came back for it, still before the earliest collection time.
Then my car wouldn't start so I literally had to run to DD1's to be in time for childminding duties. I can't remember the last time I ran anywhere! I can't remember last time I wore a skirt either, so I think some more will have to go soon.
Thanks for posting progress reports, sorry to hear about those with bad news.0 -
PollyWollyDoodle wrote: »The sideboard on the other hand, I could gaze at that for hours! Inevitable question - what paint did you use? (I'm really hoping you don't say A---- S---- - I tried it and couldn't get on with it at all.)
Erm, sorrrrryyyyy, it was AS. What was the problem? I shellac'd the base all over (not the top, i sanded that back to the wood), then put two coats ASCP (Annie Sloan Chalk Paint), then a coat of "Frenchic" finishing coat. The wood was still grinning through so I applied another ASCP and two more finishing coats (it's a kind of laquer). Frenchic also do paint, that I think I prefer to AS. I buy Frenchic in a shop in Wales, but I think other places do it.
i struggle a bit with AS wax so the finishing coat is preferable for me. The top just had three coats of danish oil.
Iqueen, so sorry to hear your news.
Min's game day #17 (I don't think anything now will match the randomness of yesterday...:D) Mav, that's exactly what we were doing - all standing round watching it do.... not very much :rotfl:
1. An M&S cookbook that is literally falling apart - only fit for recycling
2. Another one pot cookbook that only really had one recipe i'd do. Most of my cookbooks I read for pleasure, but not this
3. A silicone chocolate mould - never used
4. a one year out of date pack of bread mix - I don't think the yeast will work.
5. Another box of yeast - also over a year out of date.
6. A box of espresso cups and saucers - purchased when Woolies shut down and never opened.
7. A tiny remote for.... something
8. A piece of art DD did at primary school - sort of puppet thing. DD is 19 :rotfl:
9. A "Euro 2004" () placemat DD made in primary school
(these last few things had fallen behind the desk in the office and presumably been there for 11 years:o:o:o)
10. A "skater style" dress bought for DD 2 years ago and that we failed to send back when it didn't fit her(also found behind the desk)
11. A small bag of curtain hooks that i think will now be too brittle.
12. A hook for a curtain pole (the bit in the middle of the window that it would rest on) that we no longer have
13. Cuddly dog
14. Cuddly ostrich
15. Cuddly teddy bear
16. A DVD bought for DD birthday last year - she already had it, and we didn't take it back.
17. A spongebob notebook
I think what's happening now is that, as things are going, I can see where stuff has fallen behind units etc, as windowsills are clearing of obvious things the "invisible" stuff is becoming more visible.
I can definitely see a difference in every single room now.:T
Also, I came home with half a dozen shopping bags of groceries. Unpacked them systematically - everything had a space and it wasn't anything like the ballache it used to be
Ooh, there was also a picnic mat - I might carry that over to tomorrow.
Edit - picnic rug added to today - DS has kept cuddly dog; thought he might, hence the holding room for a while.I wanna be in the room where it happens0
