I've decided that the next time we're all here, I will ask each family to bring their's with them!

This is so helpful NouveauRiche, it's something that has helped me to get rid of towels and chairs too! We still have enough towels and bedding for us and four guests (we currently have two spare double bedrooms, until baby comes along!). We do have six friends to stay about once a year but I'm sure we can ask one couple to bring their own towels etc, they're very good friends. Same for chairs, we've got eight which is plenty, if we needed more I'm sure we could borrow some.

Gardening stuff done, now onto decorating stuff. A nice man from freegle is currently in the garden sawing up the wood from dismantling the shed which he's going to take for firewood. There was a huge mountain but he's working through it and is on his third car full now - that's three car loads we didn't have to take to the recycling centre! I did one Car load of roof felt and misc recycling yesterday and hubby and I took all the plasterboard and more misc crap this morning so I can feel the garden breathing a sigh of relief - or maybe it's me!

I did all of my folded clothes yesterday and shoes and feel totally liberated. So much space left to fill now haha!

I am itching to get started on my mans clothes but he is a bit reluctant and I have a feeling I will have to put all the clothes away for ever if I do his clothes too.

It would be great to have all the before and after pictures at the start of the thread so newbies can see the magic without having to trawl through so many pages of threads.

Just popped in again, to check for an important email, which hasn't arrived! :(

You obviously have more self-discipline than I have! Or more invitations! ;)
    Morning All,
Well I did my towels yesterday.

One that I found hard to let go of was a very thick luxurious bath mat which I bought last year. It was so thick, it never fully dried between baths and was a nightmare to dry the mat after washing - was too heavy to peg on the line so I had to lay it across a rotary line.
    Anyway, it's gone now.

I also used an old beauty box for storing the flannels in - just the right size!

I thought your brilliant kondoed towels deserved an extra showing! Fabulous! Love the flannels - I've been collecting containers that might be MK useful since Christmas! Already used some, and eventually, the leftovers will be binned.

You just reminded me, that I have several of those luxury bath mats - they are square 'shower' ones, discarded by my daughter... I don't have a shower, and use a cork bath mat for warmth! :rotfl:

I've been putting off sorting out my dining room dresser. I have a large extended family and we tend to organise family get togethers here as my garden is secure for the kids and I have a decent sized living room. I've decide to kondo some of this stuff:
20 extra dinner plates (I live alone....why so many?)
    24 glass fruit bowls
    20 coffee mugs
    3 spare cutlery sets
7 (yes, 7!) glass serving bowls.

I've decided that the next time we're all here, I will ask each family to bring their's with them!

OMG! I have yet to do this stuff! It doesn't bear thinking about. I don't think I have quite so many of these items, but then, I said that about clothes, too! :rotfl:

Just read this article suggested on MumsNet. It's good for (re-)motivation.

  • That's a very good article, thanks for that iQueen. I bought the book on my Kindle, so if I'm on the train and I finish my current read/get bored with it, I flick to Marie Kondo and have a bit of a refresher - I find it helps if my inspiration is flagging a bit, and reminds me to discard first and store afterwards, something I've slipped on a few times.

Dilemma - I'd welcome advice please. When I was christened, I (or rather my parents) received a bible. It's bound in white leather, it's in tiny print on flimsy pages; it's never been used in over 50 years. It was 'too good' to take to church or Sunday school, and now I don't go to church. If I did rediscover my faith I'm sure I'd want a 'Good News' type bible (preferably in large print!) But ... it's inscribed on the flyleaf by my godmother, who was my mother's dearest friend.

I think I've answered my own question, it definitely doesn't spark joy in me but I feel an immense amount of guilt at the idea of disposing of it. Has anyone else got rid of stuff like this?

The towels look amazing Clutterfree! It makes me want to swap my matching ones for a rainbow effect so I can just look at them in the cupboard. :rotfl:

No Kondo plans today. A very full recycling bin went out this morning though.

Yes I had a similar dilemma, a gardening logbook with a message in the front from my favourite and much-loved aunt, now gone. I ended up tearing up the book which was no use to me, and keeping the front cover with her message on, it went into my keepsakes box. Clearly you have to be OK about destroying books to do this :o but it was meant to be written in so I figured it was OK
Given that your bible is from your mother's dearest friend rather than yours, I guess the question is would you keep it because you loved the giver, or for your mum's sake?

Hi to all on this lovely sunny day! I've just caught up with the recent posts and benefitted from the neat ideas and motivation. Loving the tidy towels, and the bedding sets from earlier.

Today I did a load of ironing just so that I could kondo two jumpers and two shirts. I was planning to get into the hanging stuff, but am not sure I can finish it before bedtime. Perhaps if I break it into coats, suits, dresses. Took a big bag to the charity shop yesterday, and the newly ironed things will complete another bag which can go tomorrow.

I'm trying to fight my "fear of the future" by not keeping clothes I've slimmed out of, but I'm not too good at keeping the weight off at the moment.

I even looked at some new clothes in the shop yesterday, and asked myself if they "sparked joy" - they didn't (although they were useful), so I left them in the shop.

If it helps, I once read that keeping larger clothes is effectively giving yourself permission to regain the weight as you have the safety net right there in your wardrobe. If you get rid of them, you subconsciously try harder to stay on track as you don't have any fallback options.

I lost weight a few years ago (went down 6 sizes) and got rid of each size as soon as I could fit into the next down. An expensive way to do it, but it does keep you more accountable. Still struggle with my weight now but I refuse to buy up a size so as soon as they're snug, it gets me back on track pretty quickly.
