If it helps, I once read that keeping larger clothes is effectively giving yourself permission to regain the weight as you have the safety net right there in your wardrobe. If you get rid of them, you subconsciously try harder to stay on track as you don't have any fallback options.

I lost weight a few years ago (went down 6 sizes) and got rid of each size as soon as I could fit into the next down. An expensive way to do it, but it does keep you more accountable. Still struggle with my weight now but I refuse to buy up a size so as soon as they're snug, it gets me back on track pretty quickly.

I dropped a few dress sizes a few years ago and as the weight came off I just took my clothes to the CS and bought some tops and trousers OK for work whilst I was there...these were re donated once I reached next size. However reverse didnt happen:rotfl: Weight crept back on and just bought clothes to fit :D I have kept a couple of things thought that will act as my weight loss barometer. I would love to wear them again and am determined it will be next challenge once it am Kondoed.

Have been to recycle centre today and wheelie bin now full of carp - cant possibly get anything else in. Have started another CS bag or 3. Still clearing one pile of carp and turn round and there is another saying 'my turn'

Congratulations on your weight loss! That's marvellous, well done.:)

I don't know about "permission to regain weight", I have plenty of permission to lose weight in the clothes I "grew out of" but it doesn't seem to work :(.

I didn't manage any more kondo-ing today, as a friend phoned for a long chat. Still, tomorrow is another day.

  • Life went a bit mad since my first post on here nearly a month ago, but I am still slowly but surely Kondo-ing away! I'm still waiting for the book from the library, but not letting that stop me from discarding for now.

I managed to get through most of the DH's paperwork mountain that I mentioned in my last post - ended up with three bags of shredding to go to the recycling. I have started going through my own paper mountain, i.e. the filing cabinet and getting rid of notes from teaching courses I attended when I first qualified six years ago... If I've not looked at them in six years, I'm not likely to any time soon! I'm hoping to continue with that shortly, but the weather is so beautiful at the moment I have been busy kondo-ing the garden, i.e. weeding and trying to tidy it up a little bit. I also re-homed three sets of curtains to my in-laws that they gave us "to do until we got the curtains we wanted" when we moved in 5 years ago, so they have cleared an under-bed storage box. :j I'm also going through kitchen cupboards and using up any items that are approaching their sell-by, making cakes, etc - much to DH's delight!

I'm still doing shed stuff today, it's taking ages as it's involving disposal of all the old felt and plasterboard and wood from the old shed. I'm not allowed to do any heavy lifting as I'm pregnant (due end of July) so I'm having to rely on OH before I can get on with some tasks. It's a little frustrating as I am so used to lugging stuff to the dump and feeling the joy of getting rid exactly when I want, whereas he hates the dump run so it's built up.

Yes, caitybabes !! It's driving me nuts not being able to do any heavy lifting (for the same reason) when clearing out the garden and house. I normally would load up the car myself and do tip runs around my daily routine, but it is driving me mad that I'm having to wait for DH to be available to help me. There is also the slight negative that when he does help, he spies things that I am kondo-ing that he "rescues them", "just in case" we need them in future. Still some Konverting to do with him, I think!

Slow and steady and still a long way to go, especially with battling against the home renovations, but getting there slowly. :)

The trouble with losing weight is... the diets! They are temporary. :(

I changed to Low Carb more than 10 years ago. It took at least a year for it to become an unthinking habit (and I happen to like protein and natural fat, more than anything! :rotfl:)

I lost weight steadily, and then lost 5 stones, due to an upsetting experience. My weight has remained steady ever since, and I can eat anything I fancy now. Although...

I rarely feel like chocolate or sweets (about 4 Fingers of Fudge a year, and chocolate only when it is, rarely, gifted.) I can only face cake by-the-slice, with a cafe coffee, occasionally - too sweet. I don't buy biscuits or other carb snacks - I like them, but it just never crosses my mind nowadays.

I don't buy convenience foods, and cook from fresh, eating only when I feel genuinely hungry.

Despite the government's so-called 'healthy eating' (no low-fat options for me, with the extra carbs and carp they also include!), I fry in lard, eat lots of pure butter, and double cream and cheese are always on my shopping list!

My cholesterol level is below 4, I am fit, and I no longer get blood sugar swings. BP normal. Brilliant!

I gave up added-sugar 50 years ago, and-added salt 40 years ago. I do put sugar on strawberries, sour stewed fruits and in home-made chutney. I put salt on chips, fried eggs and tomato sandwiches, but I don't put it in my cooking or put it on meals. (Oops, I put a little in mashed potatoes, with butter and cream, but butter, cheese, bacon, bread etc have some salt in anyway.) Also, most fruit and veg have some un-modified sugar in.

I love my 'diet' - it's my way of eating for life. :)

Oo! And I don't exercise, which is why I have lost more weight in the flurry of kondoing! :j

  • I have spent another 4 hours sorting through paperwork today! I think I might be half way through now. I knew it would be a hard slog which is why I was dreading it. However now there is some joy in seeing empty shelves and neat and tidy files in the drawers. Some are still bulging,so I know I have those to do. I think I will be more careful in the future about what I put in the files, I have gone paperless on some bills and I will try to keep on top of it more regularly so that it does not build up to this level again.

Some things have been easy to discard - old listings of what's onat the local cinema, some have been hard - how many years's worth of old pay slips do I really need? Not much paperwork "sparks joy" but not having it could cause a lot of grief. I have kept a lot of old accounts by just keeping the closing statement in a separate "old accounts" folder, this way I will have the details of that account should I ever need it. I have kept all my pension statements after I read on line that they should all be kept. I have about 5 different pensions from different jobs and I get a statement for 4 of them every year and I have a few years to go before retirement. That's a lot of statements!

I will it ever be as light as Marie Kondo suggests on paperwork, but I will have a lot less! Hopefully this will help someone else who is struggling with paperwork.

Good luck to those Kondoing other parts of their house.

On pensions when I get the new statement I bin the old one as they are just a list of annual transactions with the opening balance from the new one matching the closing balance of the old one so I can't see the benefit in keeping those. Plan rules or special info on the pension is a separate issue.

  • Hello klever konverts I am de-lurking for some ideas on how and where to store rolls of gift wrap please ? I have about 6 which I want to keep as they cover most needs. Tia

Hi, Just wanted to say I have a hanging suit cover, which was a freebie, and holds giftwrap and lives in my wardrobe, not taking up too much space and out of the way.

Good idea for gift wrap, thank you.

Can I ask, how are you all sorting your shoes?

Mine used to be in a hanging IKEA storage thing which did work well but there's no room for it as we got rid of the wardrobe in the spare room and we've halved our hanging space so now share a 3ft rail between me and DH. I've got mine in an under bed storage zip canvas thing and his are on a shelf in a cupboard but I'm wondering if I'll be able to easily bend down the more pregnant I get and his shoes are a bit smelly so not ideal in a cupboard with clothes!

    Thank you in advance :)

:) I sort out shoes by not owning very many at all, and they stand on the bedroom floor (one pair of shoes and one pair of trainers).

Re shoe storage, just a word to the wise (I'm sure you're all ahead of me here) about not storing shoes in plastic boxes. I'm astonished that plastic shoeboxes are being made for this very purpose, and that those shallow large underbed plastic lidded crates are suggested as suitable for shoes.

As a former wardrobe mistress, you really want to have shoes stored in something breathable, not plastic, or you will end up with rank, mouldy shoes.

Look at airing shoes out for a minimum of 24 hours after wearing before putting them into whatever storage receptacle you've selected. The original shoeboxes, if you retain them, are a good place to keep them; contained, stackable, breathable cardboard. If you need shoeboxes and haven't got any, try asking politely at a shoe shop at a quiet time, not the Saturday melee or the sales. I've always had helpful assistants go fetch me several unwanted ones from the back, no fuss and no incredulity at such a bizarre request.

I have my hiking boots stored in calico reusable shopping bags, one shoe in a bag and the two bags consolidated into a third, as these aren't in regular use. They sit on a high shelf in an out-of-the-way place. Since they're only worn a few times each year, it'd be daft to have them underfoot.

I like those multi-pocket hanging racks for some kinds of storage but I think for shoes, they would only be suitable for something like ballet pumps for someone with very small feet. They're great hung over a cupboard door to hold cleaning materials/ dusters etc etc, tho. ;)
