I have my three year old grandson here today so every toy in the house (and there are plenty, believe me) will be out. By the end of his visit, they will all be put away into the little room off the lounge. That room is stuffed full of things like toys, books, craft things etc. etc. I have tidied it over the past few months but it always ends up a mess. Do I pay someone to put some shelves up or do I get rid of much of my craft stuff? Probably be cheaper to get rid and replace if and when needed. I am desperate for that room to be organized. Maybe tomorrow......or Sunday. The trouble is, I have two grandsons here all day Saturday so it will get messy.
Oh well, what's a bit of mess when the boys are having fun playing?0 -
Hi Fellow Konverts
Just popped inn to say hello and post an update.
My bedroom is a joy, this morning the sun is shining through the washed windows, the bed is made with my favourite bedding, the surfaces are clear only things i need are out on show. i keep going to have a look that its still the same and its not an illusion Is that sad?:D
A note on storage if i may be so bold. 6 pint plastic milk bottles cut down to size, are great for items waiting for the perfect container. As are 2L bottles, cut in half use the bottom bit for storage and the top for a mini greenhouse for tender plants.
You can also store items in plain sight. My summer quilts are folded in half and put in a single quilt cover and placed over the headboard of my bed as it is metal and uncomfortable to lean on. In summer i put the winter quilt in its place. In the guest room i put the extra quilt in a cover and leave it folded across the bottom of the bed. Plump up the pillows and i have a bed looking like a showroom or posh brochure.
Maybe thats sad?
Thanks for the welcome. Sorry if it sounds like i,m preaching.:(0 -
I need to do a second cull on my clothes (and a third when I bring down the spring/summer stuff from the loft).
I thought I'd done really well getting rid of a lot of stuff and keeping those things I like to wear but I've now realised that some of the stuff I've kept is looking shabby - bobbled jumpers, some bits are misshapen - comfy and warm but not the sort of thing to be wearing out in public.
I'd sorted my jeans/jeggings/leggings out and had a draw all neat and tidy but the same 3 pairs seem to be washed, dried, folded and can't quite fit back in so sit on top and get used again....another draw to go through again.
I really need to go through my fabric stash at some point but I'll need a good few clear days to get it all assembled and then sort it, refold it and store it properly....there's lots of it and I know that the majority of it will still be sitting there in 10 years time unless I do something about it now. for anyone who isnt planning on reading the book, or is having a hard time finding it, I found that Marie did a 'google' talk, you can find it on youtube. (lasts about an hour) going through the method.
I now have the book, but it was still good to watch at the end, as she does a Q&A session.Total Debt in Feb 2015 - £6,052 | DEBT FREE 26/05/2017Swagbucks £200 Valued Opinions £100Dave Ramsey Baby Step 2 | Mr Money Mustache Addict0 -

My kitchen is emptier and happier, as is my bookshelf. I used to be a completist, I had e.g. all of the Discworld novels even though there are some that I'm not bothered about. It was refreshing to go through them and keep the ten or so that I always return to, and let the others go
Completist - this is ME! I just never knew it had an official name.
I've been a lurker on here since the thread started and it has been a real eye opener for me. I am by nature tidy, but I have been astounded by how much useless "stuff" has been taking up cupboard and drawer space, and although outwardly the house doesn't look much different, the feel of it has changed. Other posters have said they feel lighter and I have found myself nodding in agreement. That's exactly how it feels.
still having trouble with my books though. I had a book deprived childhood and longed with all my heart and soul for books of my own. Having spent the last 40 years collecting them I physically hurt when I envisage a book cull - even though as Snakey said, I am a completist and do own a few
books I don't really enjoy.
still not touched photos as my DH wants us to go through them together but never has time :cool:People Say that life's the thing - but I prefer reading
The difference between a misfortune and a calamity is this: If Gladstone fell jnto the Thames it would be a misfortune. But if someone dragged him out again, that would be a calamity - Benjamin Disreali0 -
There is a section of the kitchen counter that is a bit of a man zone. This is where the DH keeps his loose change, keys, pens etc.
The etc consists of flyers for clubs we’re never going to, takeaway menus we’re never going to order from, Invitations to public meetings , council circulars . All going back years
This morning I noticed that the loose change was now contained in a couple of baskets, with the keys on top of one of the baskets.Pens in a jam jar and thats it , all the paper junk had disappeared.
I didn’t touch it so it must have been the Kondo Fairy0 -
Afternoon all
Pooky I think I two will have to go back through and do a second Kondo of somethings as I go
But a question - yesterday I could do nothing - today I emptied all my wire drawers and categorised things - tops trousers jumpers etc and put each category into bags to go through a day at a time when I am able
but I did so a preliminary cull as I was picking things up - now what do I do with things that spark joy but dont fit - I put on 4 clothes sizes due to medication - but some stuff still sparks joy - should I keep it and see if the weight I am losing now continues to go down or should I just pass it forward to someone who can enjoy it now - bit of a dilemma as I am not working so money is a bit tight - but in true kondo style I suppose I should just get rid
apart from that had a good day - kondoed the handbag - how many reciepts does a girl need to keep
Emergency fund £10,000
Several categories with savings in
Cars, house maintenance, birthdays
Etc I have about 10 categories
Really happy to be debt free after being a compulsive spender0 -
Just had the book and just flicked a bit.
Like Aaleigha I feel that getting rid of too much stuff can be non-money-saving. Easy to say 'get rid' and buy if oyu want it again - but that's hardly MSE.
Also with some of my clothes that I don't want - then I think 'that's nice material' and want to keep it to reuse - I do make door stops and things like that.
Must say not 100 converted yet - just read about how terrible it is to ball socks - which is what I do!
Also I think people may regret getting rid of some sentimental stuff or photographs.Great opportunities to help others seldom come, but small ones surround us every day. -- Sally Koch0
