The KonMarie method

Have been in the loft today sorting out hobby boxes, no need to buy any more paper, paint or pencils for a very long time if I decide to go to back to art classes, you do not realise what you have until you sort it into categories, sorted out spare bed linen and blankets, hope to take it the pet rescue centre to see if they can make use of it. Have a few empty spaces now in the loft, I try to do a bit of Kondoing each day, its going to take some time but I hope to be clutter free eventually.0

Take a picture of it. Store it on your phone/hardrive/online storage, back it up then send it to the charity shop where some one might appreciate it more than you do.
I was going to suggest photo as well. If it's pretty to look at but not practical to wear I was wondering if you could display it or frame it somehow.0 -

Of course of I'll miss him but I can't help thinking "Wow I can get down to some serious Kondoing with the house to myself"
Lets keep that between us
You made me chuckle.0 -
Hi guys, read my way through the entire thread and just by doing the folding thing I've managed to get rid of all my storage boxes from when I moved i.e. my clothes fit in to my one chest of drawers! I'm so happy! I hated having horrible plastic boxes everywhere.
My kitchen is emptier and happier, as is my bookshelf. I used to be a completist, I had e.g. all of the Discworld novels even though there are some that I'm not bothered about. It was refreshing to go through them and keep the ten or so that I always return to, and let the others go.
I'm having trouble throwing clothes away - I'm convinced that now I've left my job and am working for myself the weight I put on over the last couple of stressed-out years is going to magically drop off, and everything I have would bring me endless joy if it fitted me! So I'm going to revisit it all in, say, six months time, and maybe the ones I'll be chucking out are the ones I'm in now. The method isn't going anywhere, right? Or should I be ruthless and risk having to buy everything all over again? I did get rid of everything I used to wear to the office, keeping back only one suit and two tops for interviews/presentations.
To save me buying the book... what does she say about photos? I have loads of them from when my grandparents died, mainly variations on a theme (they liked taking photos of themselves/each other in nice gardens, on holiday etc - places I don't recognise and which mean nothing to me - there are also loads of my sister's kids), and it feels wrong to throw them away even though I don't want them (and nor does my sister, she wants me to keep hold of them though). I also have a few that are old old old, but I don't know who they're of. I wish I did! But I have no way of finding out because everyone who would know is dead. Do I keep them on the assumption that it's probably family?
Marie says to do photos last. Her reason being we need to hone our intuitive sense of what brings us joy. She says the process will spiral out of control and grind to a halt if tackled too soon.
The principle is the same as every other category. She says to take photos out of albums, hold/look at each one and only keep the ones that inspire joy.
I made a start on some photo's that were in envelopes. I was amazed that once I got started it was easier to discard them than I'd anticipated. They were reminders of times past but most of the photos were really bad.0 -
GQ you old romantic you! Must be the full moon;)
Apparently, if you are under 25 it is simply not done to wear matching socks.
(Nor is it done to put the dirty socks in the laundry basket, grrrr)
You're not doing too badly if it is only the dirty socks that your under 25 is not putting in the laundry basket. Mine misses the laundry basket for all dirty laundry and occasionally fills it with the clean laundry I asked him to pack away :eek:Smiles are as perfect a gift as hugs...
..one size fits all... and nobody minds if you give it back.☆.。.:*・° Housework is so much easier without the clutter ☆.。.:*・°SPC No. 5180 -
Evening all, not much kondoing going on as have the sore throat from hell, very frustrating as OH is on lates so perfect time to do it!
Anyhoo, just wondered if anyone else also realized that they had carp parked at their parents house? Know a few of you are storing kids stuff and all I can say is get rid of it now, otherwise they will still have it taking over YOUR space when they are 50  , so my mum made me clear some of it last time I was there, and yep, not as attached to all the rock programmes and other assorted bits of growing up in the 80's LOL, on the plus side, I am up £73 courtesy of fleabag.
Must go, next round of medication calling

Evening Konverts,
Well done everyone we are all doing so well.
Kirby grips and mints that's a fab idea so thanks.
Odd socks are just wrong i would rather go sockless than wear odd ones
my DH is the same, however all of my DS's wear them all the time.
Re keeping smaller clothes to slim into i wouldn't. I lost 3 stones a few years ago and i got DH to get the many bags of my small clothes from the attic.............. I didn't keep any of them. I bought new (just from supermarket) as i felt it was a reward for losing the weight and the smaller clothes just didn't look right on me. Just my opinion, no wish to offend.
I revisited the knitting patterns today. I thought i had been ruthless before but i really was ruthless today.
Keep on Kondoing
regards:j0 -
maryb, I am 25 x 2 and so un-cool you wouldn't believe it, but I find myself drawn towards the idea of odd-sockery. Most of my socks are actually black, some with a feature such as a coloured heel and toe, or a coloured cuff, so I can technically wear mismatched ones without it being obvious once I'm dressed.
And have been known to, by accident.
Loving the stories of the Konverts, it's amazing how this thing spreads, isn't it? Leading by example. Who would have thought an idea originating with a delightful eccentric in Japan would gain so much traction, globally?
I must admit to relishing the chance to re-samosa a carrier bag and to get some freshly-washed and dried clothes folded up. The orderliness of drawers is still astonishing to me. They stay tidy! Stuff comes out and goes back in and still they stay tidy! I sneak off to peek at them, just to check they haven't had a riot in there and they're still tidy. Freaky.
This morning, I washed my hair and spent 5 seconds wiping and drying the plastic shampoo bottle on the towel before putting it away. It's my new habit these past 2 months. Takes a tiny amount of time but makes sure that the bottle is never grungy. It has to live out as nowhere else to put it. And I will use all this bottle up before buying the next one, which is a step change from me as when the line of shampoo dips below the label, I start to get anxious about running out. Which is ridiculous as I live in the centre of a city and have dozens of places I can buy shampoo only a few minutes away.
Righty, time to do some brekkie. Have a happy kondo-ing day, lovely peeps. GQ xxEvery increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

They do stay tidy, don't they - even in my house!! It is astonishing to me, too. I see things with new eyes. Yesterday I noticed a pile of papers on a bookcase, what is that, thought I? Turns out it is a pile of stuff for DD's university applications - she is already in her second term, and applications were a year and a half ago. That's how long they'd sat there. At least it was easy to let go of.
I am having to do mine piecemeal - today i am venturing into the walking boot and wellies box  I am a little nervous - there might be s p i d e r sI wanna be in the room where it happens0 -
You should see how gingerly I fish things out of my allotment shed where there are always humungous s p i d e r s. Would it be possible to don a pair of marigolds, so that if you did disturb one of the blighters, at least you wouldn't touch it?
Dammit, Janet, I have to go to w*rk now, and I want to kondo something. Oh, I know, I'm going to the library after work to return two books and pick up a reservation, so will have technically kondo'd one book.
Keep up the good work and be sure to tell us how it went later todya. GQ xxEvery increased possession loads us with a new weariness.
