Hello everyone,

this morning (xx/12/2014) i received letter (not registered) from my car insurer. Letter states that i was involved into some kind car accident with Mr.xxxxx on xx/12/2014. I don't have a clue, what's going on as i never was involved in any car accident. There is forms attached in a letter, which i should fill regarding imaginable car accident. Or i should contact them and give details over a phone. I don't feel that i have to fill any forms or to contact them in any way, as i was never involved in any car accident..Any opinions what to do and how to deal with current situation?

Thank you

  • Probably a misread registration does the letter nclude the make/model of your car or where the incident took place ?

You could just ignore it but its unlikely to go away assuming the number isnt a premium one I'd call them to get more info

worst case scenario is someone with same make/model and colour has cloned your plates (in which case you need to know so you can get police to put a marker on that registration)

best case is the make/colour are different so obviously a misread registration

If you dont contact them they may not query the incident and pay out. Then you lose your no claims and risk them cancelling the policy.

You need to contact them and explain that you have not been involved in the accident they claim.

Your you in the area on the day in question?

  • Btw i received 2 letter's from them, 2 letter's but with different ref numbers on it..

I just got back from police station. Guys looked at letter's. There isn't anything, there isn't car reg, street, town or time of "accident" included..Nothing..Police guy said, that i have to contact insurance company ( letter's received not from my insurer) and ask for more details and then come back to them with additional information and they will look into it for me..I send complain email to complain department and i send another one where i'm explaining that i don't have to do anything with it and requested detailed information from them..I prefer to deal trough emails as it will be proof of everything rather then phone calls...It's clearly scam, so i will take it forward with police regarding this..what can i say, very nice christmas gift i guess...
How to cover myself in all this regarding my NCB? what actions should i take?

I doubt your insurance would pay out without contacting you first. Im also guessing the forms youve been asked to fill in ask who your insurer is.

I would wait for more details before mentioning it to your insurer.

Im not sure its a scam more likely a bump where the other party sped off leaving distraught victim to recall registration plate incorrectly but hopefully car colour will differ so obviously misread plate

Forms are to fill all detailed information regarding this "accident". They mentioned my insurance company in one of letter's..When i should contact my insurer regarding this? i don't want to loose 8 yers of my NCB...
  • Assuming they mentioned your insurance company by name, In that case I would contact your insurer now and let them know you havent been in any incidents and as such have asked the other insurance company for full details of the alleged incident.

Most insurance T&Cs include conditions requiring you to inform them in the event of any accidents or claims off. Hopefully they wont affect your NCB unless proven
  • Let's say insurance company will admit that it is administration error. I think it won't be enough, can i claim due to stress ect..because it causing a lot of stress at the moment..someone has to take responsibility for actions taken against me for no reason at all..?

No, of course not. It is an a query that may be legitimate. The fact it stresses you it called 'life' and you have to deal with it. Call their bluff. You want details of any incident date/time/location. If within the bounds of reason, you need to pass it to your insurer.

Well, the thing is all day and night on xx/12/2014 i been at hospital as my partner gave birth to our baby. I been today at hospitals security (no one was in) will fill request to retrieve CCTV footage regarding this.

I'm whiling go to the court in both ways: if it's false claim by someone or if this is insurers bluff or some sort administration mistake. To me personally, it cost time, a lot of effort fetching evidence around and it cost some money as well. There is a name in letter who claiming against me. If there is cloned car, police will deal with it. I wont let it go that easy because it's wrong in any possible way.

Criminals have to take responsibilities for criminal actions or insurer will have to take responsibility for mistakes. There is small baby in a house, there is my partner after surgery, if be honest, it causing a lot of stress for us..plus christmas spirit messed up..:( I will go on monday to hospitals security to have a chat, which way i can request CCTV footage..because on x-th of december, my car was standing still for at least 24 hours and i been in a hospital as well..

My opinion on whats going on, someone for real claiming false claim. x-th is saturday, most people off work and moving around with shopping and other personal stuff..but if it is this way, man which claims probably got my reg plate earlier and decided to make claim for weekend, very clever..i'm sure that it will be witnesses as well..the thing is, mots people would let it go to resolve it ASAP and they will have to deal with lost NCB and much more expensive insurance..Well it's not my case.

I will be posting whats going i believe it will be very helpful in a future because we live in sick world.
  • your going to an awful lot of work before you've had any concrete info.

I would hope the hospital would only release cctv to police but theres a chance they may only keep it for a week or so anyway.

Try to stop getting so stressed until you get more details but if you do need it, it sounds you've got a great alibi
