A retro dinner party dessert idea - slice the top off an orange, scoop out all the flesh. Combine flesh, juice and vanilla icecream (mix, or blend till smooth) then pile it all back in the orange shell. Put the top "lid" back on, brush water around the orange skin and sprinkle sugar over it. Put back in freezer to refreeze, and take it out about 15 minutes before you want to eat it. (Obviously you would do one for each person)

We like julienne carrots soaked in the juice, zest and ribbons of rind. We have it as side veg with meat and potatoes (good with lamb, chicken or gammon) cold with salad and added to deep fried slivers of beef in one of those little Chinese sauce packets which we have with either noodles or hm fried rice. I haven't tried this yet but I also have a bag of oranges bought to make sauce for some duck legs and I am planning to try orange curd as a change from lemon. Hope this helps. :)

you could also slice them up and boil them up in sugar and water until you have crystallized oranges
Great idea - and even better when coated in chocolate (nothing fancy, Sainsbury's basic chocolate at 37p/100g works well). The candied fruit will last a while, guild with chocolate and sprinkle with chopped almonds nearer the time and they'll do for Christmas favours....I feel a Nigella moment coming on as I type!

  • You can remove all pips and then boil them up whole until soft. Then whizz up in a food processor (or bash up yourself) and add to a cake to make an orange cake. Let me know if you would like more details.

Found myself in a similar situation- don't like eating oranges and don't really like marmalade either. Ended up adapting my lemon curd recipe to make orange curd a couple of times - worked pretty well.

The oranges had been in the fridge for quite some time by the time I got round to it though. What recipe did you buy them for originally? Is it something you could make one per week to get through the oranges. Kept cool, its amazing how long they can last...

How about the orange version of Limoncello?
Peel the oranges with a peeler - making sure you dont take the pith.... drop the peel in some vodka - leave to brew for a few weeks. Strain the peel out.
Depending on how strong you want the final result to be - you can either just add sugar to the mix, or a syrup. It will all dissolve in time!

I freeze excess oranges and other citrus fruit whole, and make marmalade when I have enough for a batch (about 2lb). You can make separate sorts, or 3 or 4 fruit types. It is good to include at least one lemon in any case, as it aids setting. Each batch is different, and all yummy :D

I use a lazy person's method where the fruit is cooked whole until REALLY tender, then cut in half, pips removed (keep cooking water and pips), and blitzed in the processor, put back into the liquid with the pips tied in a piece of muslin (or square of old sheet), bring back to the boil, boil for 10 minutes, remove bag of pips, add sugar and boil to set. I can find the quantities if anyone is interested.
