Potaoes - coolest place possible. Dark place, light makes them green. Somewhere dry; damp is bad for spuds. They keep for weeks and weeks if they have been well stored (including before you had them). Just cut out eyes and straggly growing bits, as long as not green they are fine. How about planning to grow some later this year? Even better! Old buckets or rough patch of soil will do. Home bargains do good seed potatoes :)

Thanks for this, think the best place for the sack then will be our cloakroom as its so cold in there even the light bulb is on a go slow.

Have grown potatoes in the past and am currently in the process of extending the veggie patch so will definitely be on the list for this year.

  • Good morning, just did first grocery shop of the month at Mr M's and was a bit over what I was hoping for so will need to be a bit more careful in the weeks to come.

Have made meal plan for 1 week and hopefully will be able to stick to it. Lots of HM soup on the menu and will be using SC much more.

Best of luck to everyone. :)

First shop of this month was before the New Year. £7.34 on washing liquid, softener, bread, milk & cup a soups for work lunches. I usually have a freezer full of soup, but like to have these as a back up.

Going to spend some time today looking for vegetarian/vegan recipes. Going to try & cut out dairy, something I'm eating is not agreeing with me, and I'm determined to find out what!!
My name is CherryPie and I'm addicted to grocery shopping!!

Please can I join in - New Years Resolution not to spend unnecessary money on food as well as to watch the pennies in other departments as well.

Have had a careful think about how much I will need, against how much I have already stored away, and how much I aim to grow. So I want to set the bar low - very low - and see how I go on.

Please can you put me down for £100 this month, if I get below that figure i shall put the residue into my 'savings' and start afresh next month.
The hardest thing will be to walk out of the supermarket with only what i have on my list.

Forgot I hadn't bought meat or veggie alternative for NYD dinner or snack type bits for NYE so ended up spending about 8.20 in Waits (lost the receipt grrr so waiting for exact amount to come through on online banking) and 2.25 in Sains for duck legs, veggie mushroom and chestnut things, pork pie, filo prawns etc. Will update signature when have exact amount from W. Am keeping all receipts this month so write myself a little note in place of the missing receipt.

Also spent 5.75 in Wilks not sure if will count towards grocery budget, was for a nail brush, a mini chalk board and chalk for kitchen, reduced (to aid shopping listing!) And some cute penguins to hang on tree (reduced also). So not groceries as such but thinking about it in previous months I'd have probably lumped it all in the grocery budget so probably ought to!

On a positive note leftovers from yesterday's dinner should feed us tonight so can roll the planned dinner (tuna steaks) forward.

NSD yesterday good start to new year. Think I will need just eggs today.

does anyone know if there is a facility on my supermarket or anything to put a full shop in and find out where's cheaper overall based on what I buy in a weekly shop?

I do all groceries online. Used to use a but got fed up, if I got more than one shop in a week my bank would put a fraud alert on, cancel the order and a wouldn't even bother to tell me! I tried s about 6 months ago as I had a voucher and the odd time it's happened with them they are great, they ring me and sort it in time for normal delivery. I always think they are all the same with price guarantee but just realised s is in store only for that!!

So would like to find the true cheapest overall based on my shopping but I suspect it's not that simple!!

Savvy Shopper! I've been Money Tipped!
So today I spent £7.92 in sains. This gets me beans and tomatoes to make a sausage chilli tonight. It also gets me some fruit, and salad bits. I was annoyed to see they were out of ground cumin in their own branded spices and only had cumin seeds or the more expensive schwartz brand had ground for 65p more. So I decided to buy the seeds and grind the whole jar at home in my spice grinder. It probably isn't rocket science and I'm sure a lot of you make decisions like that all the time but it kept best part of a pound in my pocket today so I'm pleased.

Just done a trip to Aldi and decided to walk there to limit the amount I could buy and carry home. Managed to spend £13 (£3 over the tenner that I'd hoped for) but I did get a ready meal for parents evening this coming week (need a quick and easy tea as its a very late night) and enough basics to last the week ahead.
I then popped into the local shop for some diet coke - 6 cans for £2.
So a total spend of £15 today - I may need a pint of milk but other than that I should be sorted for the week. Famous last words....
