Honestly though I am struggling to keep up having the family home all day. My son has gone through a bag of tangerines since yesterday morning. At least when you send them in with a packed lunch you know they are getting 1 per day in there not 6 like he'll eat at home. I suppose I shouldn't grumble because he is a healthy eater but he munched through half a cucumber as a snack this afternoon!

It's great your son has such a healthy appetite, but yeah, get wot you mean. I was wondering if maybe you could make snacks. You could do some kind of flapjack, made with value oats or other things. Where I live you can buy three cucumbers for £1, so maybe might be able to find a cheaper place to shop, just some suggestions.

  • Another NSD here, 2nd in a row, but the weather really is too nice to waste time going shopping. Made a large cottage pie as am getting a bit tired of bbq's and salads each night.
  • Having spent the time between Christmas and New Year having a bit of a Financial Reality Check (this was rather painful and certainly not a fun way to spend the week!), I am joining up to what seems like a gazillion different challenges on the boards.

Can I join in with this challenge, too? We are a family of 7, myself, OH, four teens and one almost teen/ This month should be a low spend month as I bought far too much food for over Christmas and a bumper YS shop at Morries a few days ago means that the cupboards and fridge are full! Aiming for £150 groceries budget this month. I'm planning to sit down later today with a coffee and aim to get a monthly meal plan sorted out - looking at the beginning of the thread there are some brilliant ideas for low cost meals so I'm definitely going to have a look round the Recipes Index for insperation.

    Good morning,

Lynnejk thank you for your warm welcome, it is good to be back, I really need a challenge and to normalise my life, back to the tried and tested routines.

I am aiming for a NSD today, as I have all I need and don't need to buy anything.
Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).

    Morning all
Welcome to you, I'd suggest instead of setting a budget for the first couple of Months you save receipts and monitor spending so you know what you normally spend and therefore what's achievable for you. You have a big family to cater for and also it depends on what you count into your spending budget. At the mo we have 4 at home but, dd2 and her partner are back every weekend for the day on Sunday so cater for those at well and Christmas and new year we had all 5 plus partners and mil.
I set my budget at £400 a month and think that seems quite high but I know we can't really manage on much less, this is food cleaning products etc.

Happy new year to everyone, hoping today will be my 2nd nsd of the year, the fridge and freezer are heaving so plan to have some money to put by for freezer filling if I meal plan right.

Happy New Year all. Going to try and reduce grocery budget this month. Managed to come under last couple of months, but going into Jan with less overstocks and may do buffet for MIL's birthday out of the budget. Put me down for £280
  • Hi everyone and Happy New Year :hello:

Please put me down for $1000 for Jan this is to feed 2 adults, 1 teenager and 2 little ones and it will incude dog food, nappies &cleaning supplies.
Ive still got loads of food in my freezer so I'm really hoping I can keep to this budget and put the extra $50 I spend each week away

I went to the shops earlier to get some bits for DS1 birthday on sunday and picked up some specials and ended up spending $73.10 and I still need to go and get some fruit :undecided
Love people use things. The opposite never works.
