Laura, we were very worried about our cat prior to my LO being born. If any children came round, especially small ones, she would hiss and spit at them occasionally trying to scratch them.

Before LO was born, we decided she would become a downstairs cat to prevent the risk of her going into LO's room at night so started that 6 weeks before due date (previously she slept on our bed) so it was already in place before baby arrived.

As I was in for 2 nights due to emc, had OH bring home baby's worn babygrows and put them downstairs for our cat to smell the night before we came home. Introduced cat to baby, and the cat pretty much just ignored the baby. If LO cried and I wasn't in the room, our cat would come and get me miaowing and trying to get me back to LO. As LO got older, the cat became quite tolerant - LO can stroke her, hug her, play with her. She has scratched her a few times - but only now she is older and usually because LO isn't being very nice to the cat. Our cat is also a bit more tolerant of other children though do tend to keep a close eye on her!

  • Thanks for the insight Saffagal. Ours is similar, she's only met a few children, the first couple she hissed at & took a swipe and the others she ran out the cat flap and didn't come back til they'd gone! She's also not very tolerant of other people except for me and DH, so when we have people round (granted that's not that often!) she tends to hide, swipe at or ignore them.

When we got a second hand crib last week, as soon as we brought it in, she jumped in it, much to DH's annoyance (the whole palava of getting the crib home & dismantling it was a bit stressful for him as it only just fit in the car then wouldn't unscrew etc... He's not very practically minded so if something doesn't work first time he doesn't look for a solution!) and then knocked it over. DH was annoyed as she's always got to be involved in what we are doing (flat pack can be interesting!) but I find it quite sweet in a way that she wants to be near us!

I had read about using baby clothes & blankets as a way of getting them used to the smell, so if we get chance we'll try & do that. I'm not sure we'll manage to keep her as a downstairs cat (she currently likes to sleep on the spare bed, which will remain a spare room once baby comes) but should give it a go really-she has far too much control in this house!

Updating my entry on the list (OMG I am No. 5!!!)

I've had my GTT appointment though, really not looking forward to that one. Will be knawing my OH's arm off in hunger!

Also, I have a placenta that is right next to my cervix, so have an extra scan to check it's position at 35 weeks. Hope it gets a move on up!

Laura, in our house it was easy to shut the door at night and thereby give her the run of the downstairs at night. We currently have a stairgate there, no longer for my LO but we still have it as the cat doesn't think she can jump over it (? - not the brightest my cat, as I know she can easily jump it!) so it keeps her downstairs.

She adjusted well to having the run of downstairs, but not the upstairs.

Glad that your scan went well yesterday niptuckfan. We were worried because our cat openly attacked small children prior to our LO. She was also a rescue and was given up after her original owners had a baby. But she's been fine.

Our cat has previously been in a household with children and did not cope which is why we have him now. As much as I say he can go to my MIL, he's been with us 8yrs so don't know if I'll give him up or not. He isn't very sociable in general ( better than when he first arrived ) but will scratch me when he gets fed up. I certainly plan to keep him out babies room, don't think a stair gate would work - he can jump on top of doors! Hoping to get him used to the new smells and items before baby comes. I've played baby crying noises already.
  • Hi ladies hope you all well.

As im a first timer I feel theres so much info online and I am keen not to buy all the gadgets going as do feel newborns don’t need this, so far I know what im after for pram, crib and have a few things like baby bath, changing mat etc all picked up in good MSE style – what I am not sure on is whats a realistic amount to buy clothes wise and things like blankets/sheets etc

Afternoon all, we're just back from a little holiday to visit in-laws, my DD's first time on a plane and abroad. Knackered from travelling now (we were delayed and only got in at 5am this morning!), but got lots of rest while we were away as grandparents were on duty :)

19 weeks now and still not feeling any definite movements, so getting a bit worried for our scan next week. Hopefully all is well, I think I didn't feel DD til 20/21 weeks, but I didn't write it down anywhere and can't remember now!

Tam, I'm so sorry to hear of Ben's early arrival, you and he will be in my thoughts xx
