When I think of the word Apple and "genius" in the same sentence, I imagine someone not unlike Joey Essex.

Apple stores have salesmen, I strongly doubt they have any technical staff and i've yet to meet a salesman who really knows what they're talking about in ANY industry/sector. Sure they learn a few big words and sound knowledgeable to the average Joe, but it's almost always BS.

The only "genuis" to Apple is the brilliant way they made the brand fashionable in the first place.

You have obviously never visited an apple store then have you? Every time I have visited with an iPhone problem, their staff have solved it. They indeed DO employ technical staff and there is a vast difference between their salespeople and their genii. Just take a look at their careers webpage.

    Keep the money.

I have a mix of Apple and other brand PCs, and I rather like my Mac mini.

Comparable high-end wintel PCs command comparable prices; it's just that Apple don't do low-end kit.

I'm just curious to know what went wrong to cost so much to repair.
    Move along, nothing to see.

Faulty. Repaired. Paid for. Simples. Keep the money!
  • No way. The retailer is the one legally responsible for the goods and as they passed the buck immediately and told you to go and get it sorted, do not give it back. It's their fault for not doing their job properly. If they had of done they wouldn't have had to pay out anything and in fact, they were daft to do so first, they should have asked for proof of what you had paid - they are stupid and incompetent, so let them suffer the loss, they deserve to lose.
  • If you feel guilty for benefiting from both a payment and a free repair, donate all or some of the money to a charity.

Whilst I am a fan of Apple they are not very repairable with many of their lower-mid level computers having logic boards (aka motherboards) with everything soldered onto it. As they miniturise further and further they are saving space by soldering CPUs/ RAM etc to the mobo rather than having a socket adding 7mm of thickness

Fantastic if you want an ultra thin machine, terrible if anything on it breaks as you have to replace the mobo, cpu, gpu, ram etc because its all one unit.

The iMacs didnt used to be as bad as the laptops but I think since they last changed the form factor the 21" is much more heavily consolidated to a single board.
  • You bought an iMac and 20 months later it became faulty. After taking it back to the store and a lot of calls to and fro they finally gave you £700 and told you thats the end of it.Now you have £700 and an iMac that still doesn't work,so it gets checked by someone else and the fault is found.Apple agree to fix the "inherant" fault free of charge.Keep the money,it's yours. The store had ample chance to get the iMac looked at properly but failed, then they paid you off.Do not feel guilty about what happened as you did the right thing by contacting them and hoping they would treat you,the customer,in the correct manner.

I suppose you could approach the retailer with the following 'hypothetical' question and see how they react...
"If I were to return the £700 would you be prepared to assume full responsibility for future repairs to my iMac should it develop a fault within the time frame specified under the Sale Of Goods Act"
Even if they were to agree in principle (it is hypothetical) would you trust them after their previous behaviour?
    And following on from that...
You could put some of the money towards an insurance policy to cover future repairs to the iMac.

The retailer wrongly abrogated their responsibility and (probably for the sake of prudence) you agreed.
    You don't owe them anything.

I often look at things from the reverse, if the repair had ended costing more would you have gone back and told them and asked for more? Of course you would.

Nhampson, you may have asked, but you would not have got any more as the store made you sign away your rights so that they did not have to pay any more. From their point of view it was a gamble -pay £700 and have no more liability or risk paying more.

Keep the money. You don't get your insurance premium back from the insurance company when you don't claim. You don't get your stake back when you lose a bet. The store took a gamble and lost. For once in your life, you come out on top. Enjoy it! :rotfl:

(but don't buy a Mac again!)
