Depends what YOU think.
Some people's views would be to return the money as the repair was free.
Others will say keep the money as it's not exactly hurting anyone.
Returning the money may cause more stress and hassle.
Personally, what's done is done now, so you may as well keep it and put it to good use.0 -
Hi,
I am, personally, not a fan of anything Apple-based & this is coming from an IT Professional! My 2 main complaints with this massive company are their pricing structure. My favourite analogy is if you have 2 IDENTICAL PC's and you put Windows on one and Mac OS 10 on the other, the pricing is VASTLY different. The Windows PC would go for around £2-300 whereas the Mac would be £800-1000. Why is this???? Even repairs cost WAY more than for Windows PC's....Sorry about the rant...The other option for this dilemma would be to donate, at least some of, the money to charity...Maybe a charity to teach Apple to make their machines cheaper!!!!

No don't give the money back.
The retailer of whom you had a contract with was under the impression it would cost £860 to repair the computer, so they only gave you £700 towards the repair, unfairly expecting you to pay the excess, the retailer would not have paid any more if the repair had cost £2000, so in this case they have said "get it repaired and here is £700, goodbye, we don't want anything more to do with you or your computer" in which case it is not theft if you kept all £700 and didn't get it repaired or if you got it repaired for free and still kept it.
The only time it would be wrong is if the retailer said 'get it repaired and send us the bill' and you then sent them a bill for £700 and it was in fact a free repair then that would be wrong.
Hope this helps and if you're still stuck I'll give you my paypal for you to send me the £700 to clear your conscience.0 -
Don't keep it as payment for stress, just keep it. They gave you £700 for the repair, and it is now repaired. If this was a family member or a friend, it'd be different, but it isn't!Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. Keep it. Firstly, they have given that to you as a way to remedy the fault. You have put it towards the repair and got some left over (in a sense).
Secondly, I'll bet there's no company process for taking this money back, and it'll be more complicated and time-consuming for them. They'll probably tell you to keep it anyway.
If you're really having a dilemma, phone the company and ask.Squirrel! If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.
Now 20% cooler0 -
Most here seem to say keep it but I disagree. You were given £700 toward the cost of an £860 repair. If the repair then ended up free the situation should change accordingly. Call the company, as many say the likelihood is they will say to keep it.
I often look at things from the reverse, if the repair had ended costing more would you have gone back and told them and asked for more? Of course you would.Opinions are like a**holes, everyone has one.0 -
When I think of the word Apple and "genius" in the same sentence, I imagine someone not unlike Joey Essex.
Apple stores have salesmen, I strongly doubt they have any technical staff and i've yet to meet a salesman who really knows what they're talking about in ANY industry/sector. Sure they learn a few big words and sound knowledgeable to the average Joe, but it's almost always BS.
The only "genuis" to Apple is the brilliant way they made the brand fashionable in the first place.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

firstly you bought an apple computer. which are are about as much use as a chocolate fireguard!
first mistake!
then you took it back to the apple store for expert advice!
second mistake!
you are very lucky you got £700 back. keep it. and in the future please spend more wisely on a useful computer rather than a fashion accessory!
i don't know why people waste their money on apple products that are over priced and under-specked compared with other products on the market.0 -
Seriously, without knocking Apple or Macs, you were sold a faulty item by the retailer. You took it back to the retailer who argued the toss with you and then eventually gave you what amounts to a bribe. You could have stood your ground and insisted they replaced the item or took on the repair. If you had done so, they would not now be £700 out of pocket.
I feel you tried to do what a consumer should (i.e. return item to retailer to sort), the retailer chose to sort it by making the £700 offer. You accepted that offer. End of.
Anything that happened since no longer involved the retailer. They had bought their way out of any responsibility both for that instance and any future instances (which might still occur by the way). So your business with them is concluded.
In short, I think you should keep the money.0
