I would say keep it as long as it was a big company who were effectively washing their hands of you.
As for Mac help, I've always found them brilliant. I've had loads of help recently over trouble with this iPad.
Think back to the late 80s and clunking computers! I remember the LEA IT adviser coming into school with this new machine - a Mac Classic. He was surrounded by staff amazed at these brilliant icons and how easy it was to use. Apple Have continued with this innovation.Member #14 of SKI-ers club
Words, words, they're all we have to go by!.

Morally, give it back.
Would *I*? Never :-)0 -
As for the small v large business.....A small struggling business wouldn't have done the deal as it was done...
Either way, keep the money. The company wanted you to accept £700 so they wouldn't have to deal with the matter any more and severed any rights you may have......So you have no right to contact them further regarding the repair. So don't.Drinking Rum before 10am makes you

From a legal standpoint, you don't have to give the money back.
From a moral standpoint, consider how the company treated you.Strider590 wrote: »Apple stores have salesmen, I strongly doubt they have any technical staff
With respect, you are mistaken:

Admittedly not all "Geniuses" have the same knowledge and mistakes are made. However, that doesn't detract from the fact that Apple insists on quite intensive training before employing them.mking90031 wrote: »I am, personally, not a fan of anything Apple-based & this is coming from an IT Professional! My 2 main complaints with this massive company are their pricing structure. My favourite analogy is if you have 2 IDENTICAL PC's and you put Windows on one and Mac OS 10 on the other, the pricing is VASTLY different.0 -
if you take the money it is theft.
The basic point is, did you indulge in any deceit to get the money? No. The people at fault wanted to get you off their hands - it rebounded on them.0 -
Keep.
No 2 ways about it. The company paid you to get away and deal with it. "I accepted £700 towards the repair costs but was told I severed all rights and associations with the retailer regarding the iMac." You dealt with it.
If the repair cost more than £700 the company would not pay extra towards it (they knew it would cost £860), so its only fair that if it cost less than £700, they do not get the leftover money back.
On another note, as another IT professional has already said on this thread, if your on MSE - stop buying expensive overpriced fashion accessories for your desk. Get a real computer - worth the sum of its parts. I will refrain from mentioning software and walled gardens and etc.0 -
Personally I would KEEP IT!!!
That's not theft it's called "pressies for yourself money"
I traded in my Iphone 5 at the Covent Garden store recently. Got £120 for it and paid the difference of £419 for an Iphone 6.
I am now hoping mine breaks and I get £700 as well :-)0 -

I'm not sure what all the mac bashing is about as this has nothing to do with the problem at hand. In any case I work with loads of "IT professionals" and many of them own apple laptops - its a perfectly valid choice.
And, as I've pointed out many times on here before if you look beyond the basic specs and look at the whole package in terms of other features and build quality/finish etc non-apple machines don't end up being too much cheaper on a truly like for like basis.0 -
They did not meet their obligation to repair or replace . They did not even offer the expected cost of repair , never mind inconvenience ,loss of use etc. I don't even know why you are asking .0
