Can anyone point me to the info or tell me more about declaring your winnings on the way back to the UK? Hubby just won $7.5k on a slot machine. He has a form declaring he is a Foreign Person etc and they said something about getting a tax form. Also, would it be sensible to get it exchanged to £ while in the US or wait to do it in the UK?
Edit: This thread has been helpful http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowTopic-g45963-i10-k2342708-TAX_on_winnings_for_UK_visitors-Las_Vegas_Nevada.html
P.S Trip report to follow, I've been keeping a diary as we go :-)0 -
Wow! Congratulations. I think a couple of people on here have been lucky enough to get a good win like that. I will leave it to them to advise you.0

Thanks, all very surreal! I've added a link to a helpful thread on TA. Just wondering about whether to change it to ££ here before we go or wait to get back and do it there. Although I'd rather not have to post off that sort of cash to get the best rates!0

Well done! :j:beer:
I read a report on tripadvisor recently of someone who won and they asked the casino to write some form of credit/ cheque that they could recash as they were planning on revisiting later that year. Might be worth doing that with some of your win if you are going back in the next year?0 -

PS well done :jThe common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.0 -
Yes, very well done on the win!! I have no idea regarding the tax etc, unfortunately I've never had that problem but hopefully your good luck is buzzing about the thread and we'll all need to ask you soon!0

that is amazing! I want more detail! Congratulations!!!
When my hubby had a win over $1099 the casino did the paperwork for him to get an ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number) and once he had that, they were able to pay him the full amount without keeping back the withholding. I know some casinos will do this, others won't. Edited to add: if the casino will do it it is the easiest option. If they won't, he can claim back the tax as you have found. There are companies that will do it for him, though I assume they charge a fee....AFAIK, he could do it all himself.
Apply for an ITIN

And file a 1040NR form.

You have to declare cash over $10k on the way out of the US.#
I have re-read your post and think maybe the form saying he is a foreign person is the ITIN and they are paying him in full, so it may be all the above is not what you were asking. The tax form will be a W2G - quite coveted, given what it's for...we have only ever had one and it was for waaaaay less.
I really cannot wait for this story. I am so excited for you guys!Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?0 -
Congratulations on the win tarkytarks.
We fly next weekend. 3 out of the 4 bank holidays have passed and I have not done a single thing of what I had planned to do (packing, planning etc). Tomorrow is going to be a very busy days.0 -
Thanks ferf, yes he was already paid the full amount (rounded up to the next dollar too). It took about an hour for them to sort the paperwork out. Thankfully I'd switched our passports into my bag when I swapped them that morning, otherwise I think they would've withheld the 30% until proved otherwise. Him giving them an Irish passport and a UK driving licence confused the heck out of them and the paperwork had to go back 3 times as they kept putting the wrong information down. In the end the paperwork still says Ireland in the address and they got the house number down wrong but it's the garage next door so if anything is posted we will get it.
I'll try and work out how to upload a pic from my iPad, but it might have to wait till we get home for that. I'll add yesterday's TR early for those interested.
We've decided to spend some a little recklessly (who wouldn't) but have stashed the majority to pay straight into the bank when we get home. Free holiday Woo! We've decided to spend the money getting the kitchen and dining room plastering sorted, new floor and then decorated.0
