I'm looking to head out to Vegas in May for the big boxing match but I'm worried about the cancellation of flights due to the nature of my visit.

Tickets will be hard to get and the fight may get postponed due to injury, could anybody give me some advice on flights that allow refundable cancellations?
My understanding is that all carriers have refundable tickets, you pay through the teeth for them though.

It's all down to the booking / ticket class that determines whether your ticket will be refundable, and this will vary from airline to airline.

For example, for Virgin, if flying economy you'd need to buy a 'Y' ticket:

The next one down (the B ticket) isn't 100% refundable so you are really looking at top whack I'm afraid if you want the option to cancel (changes are a different kettle of fish)

edit: just looked and for 29/4 - 6/5, for a Virgin flexible economy ticket you're looking at £1100 each way (£2200), compared to £435 out, and £335 back in Economy... (£770) total, so you're looking at three times the cost.

They will be very, very expensive...not sure it would be worth paying so much for the flights to have the freedom to cancel. Maybe look at flights for your dates - a quick look at Virgin's website for some random dates shows flexible economy tickets are nearly 3x the price of non-refundable.

If you have enough airmiles to buy a ticket with miles, that may be an option worth considering as a reward ticket may be flexible.
Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?

good shout with using miles / reward ticket though - best option by far :)

Maybe accept that if the fight's off you still get a trip to Las Vegas, and if you don't want to stay there then rent a car and do a little road trip round the area?

my thoughts exactly...but I suppose if I was going for a particular event that might be rescheduled, I might not see it that way? I don't know how these things work in terms of rescheduling...but if someone could only go once then I guess I can see looking into it. I can't see it will be cost-effective to book cancellable flights though.

You will normally find the refundable fare classes are the most expensive, for Virgin flights have a look here at the table of far classes and rules

  • Thanks everyone for the good advice. To save all the hassle of walking with luggage to and from the Orleans shuttle, I’ll take a cab. The prices for that weekend were already very high going back to at least December, so I am not sure if the hotels were anticipating the fight Mayweather Pacqiouor or whether its due to Pebbles suggestion Cinco de Mayo.

    Probably both.
  • Just read that the Riviera hotel has been sold to the owners of the the Convention centre and is to be demolished.
Shame - we stayed there last year and despite the negativity on here and elsewhere we had a very enjoyable stay - where will the crazy girls go??

Would you want to rent a car and explore any of the surrounding area?

Planning on the Grand Canyon, but wouldn't rent a car.

Are you just passing through? If not, 3 nights seems a long way to fly if you're not interested in looking thru casinos and not interested in sunshine :)

    How come you're going? :)

(Ps. I would argue that it's not the case of seen one casino, seen them all but I guess that could be my slant on things from having been before)

The plan is Las Vegas, see the Grand Canyon and onto LA - Universal Studio Tour so far, have to see what else is there in LA.

I always have wanted to visit Las Vegas ever since I was younger, I'm 33 in May and just need to "do it" once.
