Whilst not buying luxuries is certainly a good policy I like to take itva little further and leverage cash to get what I want for bargain basement prices or even for free.

I live inThailand where there are a steady stream of expats leaving the country who need to liquidate there possessions here and are grateful for people with cash to take whatever they have here even if it is for well less than its worth.

An example from this month I bough a job lot of Lp records for 5000 baht. I took them to the local auction where they sold for 12500 baht. After paying the auction houses commission I was left with aroundv5 500 baht profit. At the same auction I bought a box of 100 costume rings for 400 baht. In the evening I went to watch the football at a local bar. The bar has two main areas one at the front with gogo dancers and one at the back with the big screen. I went to watch the football but left thevrings in the other room where they were all snapped up at 10 baht each. My profit was then up to 6100 baht. The next day I saw an advert on one of the local for sale internet message boards from a guy who was leaving that evening and needed to off load his motorcycle.

I phoned him made a cheeky bid of 6000 baht , the bikecwas worth closer to 15000 baht which he accepted. Soo hey presto I get a motorcycle forvfree.

I think so too, but it seems to be the norm. Anything more than 1 day is sick leave, unless it is a spouse, child, parent or sibling. I've worked there 4 years, since leaving uni, and haven't had a single day off, even battling my early pregnancy nausea while working, but I have come to my cut off point.

One more reason to get the mortgage paid off, and actually start living...get off the hamster wheel they call work!!

:( It's the same where I work, weesmiler (english local authority). I couldn't get a day off for my uncle's funeral last autumn, because he wasn't a parent, child or sibling. I was allowed to flex-off and am still paying back the flex-defecit this caused nearly 3 months later.

One of my pals lost her Dad to a sudden heart attack. They wanted her back at work the same afternoon as his funeral - and that was the NHS.:(

Thank you folks. Sorry to dampen the mood, this is a happy and hopeful ship!

And although I am so saddened and upset by his passing, my grandad was a wonderful 94 years of age and lived in his own house til the very end. Slipped away peacefully in his sleep. It is all we could have hoped for for him.

    Weesmiler xx

Same happened with my dad Weesmiler, we had celebrated his 90th the month before and were ready to plan his 100th as he was in such good health! I miss him badly but I'm also happy that he didn't suffer and that he had all his faculties - he was a crossword enthusiast right to the end and had a general knowledge that astounded me. So when I think of him I concentrate on all the good things.

    :grouphug:to you and your parents.

    Hi all,

I've had a NSD today, but under the worst circumstances. My grandad died this afternoon, so I cancelled dinner plans. I work for a council and they don't consider grandparents to be immediate relatives, so I'm only entitled to one day off for the funeral. My gran also died 11 weeks ago and I rushed back to work and ended up completely burnt out and not coping after a few weeks, so I will be going to doctor tomorrow to see about having some time off now. I'm 21 weeks pregnant too, so the added hormones don't help.

    Sorry to read that.xxx

So sorry for your losses weesmiler. Sending hugs to you. If you are pregnant, exhausted and grieving, a trip to the docs would be a good idea.

I'm another one in Essex :) as you can see <

I needed a new peg bag and found a little cotton bag which isn't being used, perfect. DS needed a new sandwich box and rummaged through plastic mountain and found a box with those lock clips which will do the job. Done several similar things lately but can't remember the rest for the life of me.

I am another who cuts her own hair, been doing so for a few years now. Never in a million years would I have thought I could do it!!

Thanks for the comments re the lunch out. Yes I did drive and we went to several places. Sticking to the lunch at home idea and moving on. I wouldn't treat my friend if I couldn't afford to so assuming she can afford it.

New to the thread but sorry to hear about your loss, Weesmiler. Take care of yourself x

Just wanted to hop in as I've been doing this solo and didn't realise it was a "thing"! Started doing this with a friend at work, we both swore off spending money on ourselves in January and without meaning to consulted each other before any purchase we needed to make (like when I ran out of face power and foundation etc) to make sure they were 100% necessary purchases :o

We both felt so oddly liberated by January we've decided to carry it out through the year :) I also set myself a limit of £250 on personal spends for 2015, will be nice to have another support group on this!
