Making a point of using stuff up

I am signed up to weight watchers online (signed up in Nov but didn't start using it till last Mon, naughty!) so I'm being conscious of trying to keep within my points as well as use stuff in the house.

For brekkie I had belvita biscuit bars dated July 2014 this is something I have an issue with that I'm trying to overcome-they were perfectly fine to eat bit before I've become paranoid that the second something was out of date it would poison me to the death (ok, slight exaggeration there, ha!) but now I can cope with dried foods past their BB or UB date.

I'm going to stop buying things like that for convenience but I have quite a few packs of similar things to get through.

Also 'kiddy' based cereals are finished as of this morning, but we have enough to last till Wed morn at least and hopefully will last till Thurs morn (shopping day). Haven't decided what to do about the shopping yet. Online works out cheapest for us, but as OH is now 'dieting' as of today he likes a polar opposite to his non-diet eating and will want to buy fresh veg etc, which he likes to look at (I k ow this isn't really party to being OS or saving money but we don't tend to eat the same foodstuffs, kids have their dinner all together at the table and for the most part they have the same thing, slightly modified sometimes depending on their likes/dislikes but OH and I like to do our own thing)

All this talk of toiletries reminds me, I used to buy nice perfume at airport duty free shops when I had to travel for work occasionally (I had the money then). I still have a few part bottles. Although I never bother with make up and can only be persuaded out of my jeans once in a blue moon these days, I do like to smell nice :)

I was therefore interested to see this article http://www.theguardian.com/fashion/shortcuts/2014/nov/25/chanel-v-lidl-perfume-can-shoppers-smell-the-difference
about Lidl perfume. Now I had noticed this in store, although at the price of £3.99 I would never have dreamed it would be worth buying. Apparently though, one version is quite similar to a Chanel perfume :)

After this article had appeared, there was none to be seen in store for ages, (I imagine that it was snapped up as soon as it reached the shelves). But over the weekend I noticed it is back, so bought some :) Now, I know we are 'not buying it' but if anyone really wants some perfume, I would recommend trying this one, as it is actually very nice, and despite the naff name, the packaging is nice too - the bottle looks as good as my duty free ones on my dressing table :) And you wouldn't have to tell anyone that it only cost £3.99.......

    Good morning all.

Not returning to work today and have appointment with consultation tomorrow afternoon. Not looking forward to it. On the plus side today will be a NSD though tomorrow won't be. Will be taking hand sanitiser in an effort to avoid norovirus inevitably visiting the hospital at this time of year.

On the beauty products, I don't know whether I should name drop but I use liz earle and elemis facial skin care and have done for about 15 years. Both are not cheap brands.....
    Bexster :)

    Hi Bexster,

First of all best wishes on your consultation tomorrow, I also have hospital tomorrow, an exploratory op under general, so thank you for the reminder about hand sanitiser and norovirus!

Regarding Liz Earle, I also love her stuff, you need to stay alert to when she has special sales on QVC, when you can get decent bargains on her products.

    Hope this helps.
Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).

    Aldi do nice perfume too.

I had the misfortune to see an add on the TV for perfume recently. The one where a man is talking to a girl over the answer phone.!!!!!!? What message are they trying to impart? wear this perfume and it makes you irresistible but you turn into a halfwit. And the one where a girl lies down and sleeps on the back of a horse.Hahahahaha.Please!

I hope you are on the surgery route for your gall stones.Nasty little blighters.

Last day of the holidays here.Inset day for youngest and middle daughter going back to uni today. All Christmas decs put away, massive clean and de clutter now on the cards.

    Keep on keeping on.

    Vx

Hi caterina. Thanks for best wishes. I have no idea what is going to happen as its my first appointment which I think is the problem for me. Good luck with your op. I have no idea whether there is norovirus in the hospital I am going to but will not be waiting till I get it to find out! I'm afraid Tsv's are one of the reasons I have a good stash. It's not a problem in that my mum uses the range and I always buy on good offers, like when LE does C and P for 9.50 a tube! Just need to remember that 8 months supply of C and P in advance is probably sufficient!!

Hope tomorrow is a successful day for you x

Argh! My dishwasher packed in yesterday..bought it off Gumtree 6 weeks ago for £20 to replace the one that packed up in the summer.
Can't seem to get appliances to last these days, DW can't keep up with 2 cycles a day and I'm on my third washing machine in 5 years (11 loads a week) the husband will have a look at it as we think its the pump.

I taught myself how to thread the sewing machine and fill the bobbin so that's my 'Do 1 thing productive/constructive everyday' for yesterday. Todays is list my car for sale, which means cleaning it out, washing it and taking pictures.

I was also hoping to sort out kids room today but that will keep until tomorrow as I now have to nip into work this afternoon for a bit of training.

I have no toiletries stash, I never buy or use anything like that. I have one makeup bag with make up that I only wear when going out, 1 bottle of perfume, shampoo, conditioner, shower gel and toothpaste...nothing else!

    Good morning everyone

I am laid up with the lurgy today and slightly worried about my sickness record at work, but I'm so poorly and I have respect for others so I'm staying away! One of my closest colleagues has a 4 month old baby who's not sleeping well as it is so I'm sure he wouldn't thank me for passing on whatever this is I've got.

So. I just wanted to report the savings I made on a day out yesterday. It's DSs 4th birthday a week tomorrow but family descend this weekend so we wanted to give him a day out just the three of us. We went to see Book of Life on the Odeon kids screening and used a free child ticket (shouldn't have been valid but they let us use it anyway), took popcorn that was purchased ages ago and not used and also took drinks so that cost £5 all in. Redeemed Nectar points on the Pizza Express double up so a meal that should have cost £50 only cost £15 including tip. Then went to Legoland, tickets were bought half price a few weeks ago. Great day out! Was feeling too ill to really enjoy it but DS had fun and that's what's important.

Made the cheapest ever leek and potato soup yesterday (recipe: http://allrecipes.co.uk/recipe/6887/easy-peasy-leek-and-potato-soup.aspx) and Jack Monroe's soda bread to go with it (http://agirlcalledjack.com/2013/10/02/32p-easy-soda-bread-without-a-139-bread-maker/) so that's lunches for this week sorted for about 15p a portion.

    Have great days everyone. xx

    Ahoy Ship Mates :hello:

I'm going to join in the no more buying make up campaign. I've probably got enough to last out for job interviews and the very seldom night out.

Last night I slathered my face and neck in organic virgin coconut oil from the kitchen :D Hubs found this hilarious and kept trying to touch (aye, any excuse to get a bit fresh ;)). Surprisingly I don't have a face full of spots this morning - its not even greasy, just soft skin

One nil to the Coconut Oil - Olay that's you off the shopping list :T

Now to take the pot back to the kitchen eww lol!!!
  • Woman's Hour on Radio 4 this morning was tapping into the no-buy, less stuff zeitgeist - some familiar themes to those discussed on this thread. I wonder if any of our shipmates called in?

(I'm not back at work yet - sorry to be flaunting my indolence to those already back at the coalface :o I was multi-tasking and doing chores at the same time, honest!)
