Just came across this article on the BBC website. It speaks of our persuit of happiness particularly through the power of purchasing. Worth a read even if we are beginning to get the picture anyway.

I think William Morris may become another of my favourite quotees:

"Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful"

    Here,here!

    Kind regards

Great link Slowdown, and the quote I will borrow for my signature if that's okay. It might help remind me not to spend on silly things just because they're cheap!
  • Oh wow everyone this moves fast doesn't and such lovely inspirational ideas and stories.

Bettiespage My Herberts are my lovely kids. My dad used to call my brother and I that and I guess it stuck.

7 week wonder thank you for the notebook idea, I love writing lists and have a notebook that I use at work that I could start a spending diary in the back.

Have decided to start tomorrow :)

I used soap nuts and they were fine, but I preferred the eco balls, I got them on the site natural collection, bought them for my mum a few years back and then bought some for me, in theory, they save you a lot of money on soap powder over the years, just that your clothes come out of the wash not smelling of soap powder but you get used to that, the ones I got my mum lasted years with just few top ups of the granules inside.
I have been using the eco balls for the last 3 years. I bought them at a trade fair. Think it was Kim from Kim and Aggie's cleaning programme on the TV who was selling them. They are plastic balls filled with metal balls and soap? balls which go done after a few months and you refil the white balls. I am just on the second refil and I do a load of washing each day. They cost about £20 if I remember correctly. You not only save on soap powder but you don't need fabric conditioner either.

I spent some money!! Bought some soap nuts, my washing powder has nearly run out and people seem to rate them so I thought I'd give them a go. I live in a soft water area so I'm hoping they last a while.
You can also put soap nuts into a spray bottle fill up with water and after a day or two you can use it for cleaning worktops bathroom etc. As it goes done just refil with water and when the soap nuts are almost done put them into the washing machine in their little bag then start again with a few more.

Talking of toiletries stashes, we have only just finished the last bottle of conditioner from the Mr T clubcard points stuff a few years ago (three? four?). We still have more shampoo. Still, those clubcard points got a couple of cruises and most of a car so it was worth it! I haven't bought shampoo or conditioner in all that time, but I did learn that if you're going to stash toiletries toothpaste, mouthwash & handwash/soap get used a lot quicker!
Spent an evening preparing for packed lunches here, 2 banana cakes, a mahoosive madeira cake and a large vat of tomato and lentil soup prepared.

2NSDs brilliant. Have sorted out seeds and some old stamps DS says to put them on ebay but I don't think they will make much. Back to work tomorrow though.

Got my mum hers about ten years ago, definitely from natural collection, can't remember where I got mine, but I know my mums lasted ages.

If someone is a big soap powder user they should seriously think about giving the eco balls a go. Saves a lot of money.

    Harr harrr me hearties!

Good to see the crew are living up to the ship's name. What hard workers you are.

Tonight I played a game when the ads were on tv. I turned down the sound and just watched. No music, no words and my are some of them ridiculous. The funniest are the perfume and cosmetics where slim, unflawed, immaculate women rub their own faces, pout and gasp at their own beauty and prance around like my little ponies. It makes for fun watching.

I then turned the sound up and closed my eyes. I tried to guess what they were advertising. One had the Queen song with the lyrics 'find me somebody to love' I thought it was an online dating agency. Nope. It was a sofa shop! Hmmm, now what does that say about our relationships??

Anyway, enough of my slightly odd pastimes. I'm happy to say my pennies are firmly in my pocket after today, a pot of soup sits on the cooker top, the clothes are ironed and ready to go away and I'm ready for bed.

Back to work tomorrow. I'm giving a talk to the staff about the new SEN code of practice and not really that excited about it. Not stressed though like I usually would be at the start of term so happy with my lot.

Have a peaceful and restful evening in your cabins shipmates.

    Kind regards
    Slowdown:)
