It really is just getting into a set routine when starting and driving off.

    Or just common sense..?

See more people these days with no lights on because they think that DRL's means you have a full set of lights on.

I have the opposite problem, I always turn on my lights if it's raining or dull (or at night!) but I often forget to turn them off at the end of my journey.

I'm normally in and out of my car several times a day so it's not usually a problem but I did once leave them on when I got home for the night. Luckily, we have good neighbours, one of whom knocked on the door to tell me about my lights. I have a Post-it note stuck to my dash now, reminding me to turn them off!

I was taught that when it's too dark to see the dials, put your lights on!
A much better test is to look at a car coming towards you and think "Would I see that car better/more clearly if he had his lights on" (or vice-versa)

All three of my cars including a 1998 Peugeot have beeped at me telling me my lights are still on when I open the door!

I think this happens more often now as some cars, the dashboard lights up on the ignition rather than when the lights are on.

The worst i've done recently was where it was dull when i started my drive and i put my side lights on then ended up becomming dark later and i was driving down a well lit motorway with the still on, instead of dipped.

Only realised when i hit a dark patch of road.

One of my cars has auto lights too. DH uses it. I turn it off. Ditto auto wipers. It's not exactly hard work to turn them on when you need them! Hate all this American-style lazy driving.
Nothing wrong with auto lights, mine come on pretty much everytime I need them. The only time I do have an issue is if it's foggy but quite light and the lights won't come on, a quick flick to the front fog lights solves this though as it forces the main lights on.

My car has auto lights. They come on on a bright Summers day if a bird flies overhead, and stay on for 5 minutes, so I leave them on OFF.

The result is the bulbs don't last. I presume the last owner used the auto feature, as I am working my way around changing all the bulbs.

(I also have atomic wipers :rotfl:, just like nuclear decay, it is impossible to say when they will wipe, only that they will eventually, either at full speed on a dry screen, or immediately after I crash with a wet one )
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

Easily done when you leave a well-lit area like a garage or carpark. If you find you do this often, try parking facing a wall or fence whenever you can. Yes, you'll have to reverse out every time, but you can then easily see whether your lights are on or off.

Awful advice. There's rarely a good reason to park forwards and reverse out.
