Anyone else on this thread saving in stocks and shares? It is a bit of a rocky ride at the moment. I have invested £5k so far this year and it is 3.10% down at the moment I guess due to the uncertainty about Grexit. I had already decided a few weeks ago though to reduce my monthly payment of £1000 into my stocks and shares isa to £250 instead and leave the other £750 in my Santander 123 current account to build up my cash reserve to change my car next year. I think I may give up checking my investment portfolio daily as it is not doing my blood pressure any good :(

I check pretty much every other day, partly because there is one fund I have that I want to sell a chunk of when it is high enough but also out of interest. I know it's not supposed to be a good idea to do this but I'm not all that put off by the ups and downs, in fact usually wonder if it might not be time to squirrel away a bit more into funds that have dropped and are therefore cheaper. I'm putting £500 in every month at the mo - £250 is automated and the other £250 I move across myself. I know when funds are down it can feel as though you have made a mistake and when they are up it feels good but I never assume either state is permanent. It's always on the move. It's like choppy waters, troughs then waves. I hope that is all making sense as I have not had my second cup of coffee yet this morning.

I started this thread earlier in the year and then life got in the way and I had to change my plans a bit - but I am back on track and back to saving so would love to come back to this challenge if I am allowed? :o
Of course you can! Welcome back :)

You shouldn't check shares everyday; once a month if that really. They're long term investments and are bound to fluctuate. Just don't panic sell!

  • Thanks for your hard work SF...its much appreciated:)

This months update for me is a bit lower than normal due to car insurance, car service and a holiday in July. I have managed to get together 383.68 so that brings my total to 4631.05 or 42.1%. I'm sure i'll get back on track before the year is out.

Mine will be lower this month too as I have paid a chunk off my credit card, but I'm down to only one interest paying CC now, have seen the light and think I should pay off the credit card rather then saving, another card has a BT ending 1st August so will have to think about what to do....
