Well it looks like the Met Office is finally forecasting the cold weather that was warned of by others some weeks back.
We are not allowed to talk about this as it upsets some people.

It's easy to predict cold weather this time of the year. It's winter. The Met Office are more accurate and don't make wild guesses with huge % variability that 'others' do. Besides it's hardly unusually cold. It's just typical winter weather.

I'm still waiting for the worst winter in a century to happen that 'others' predicted months ago. Scaremongering and done to get headlines.

I really don't understand how my comment would upset people. This is a thread on winter prepping and it was an observation on the current weather this week. It was not meant to provoke or upset anyone, but appologies if it did.

I feel like I'm being reprimanded and feel sad that someone who adds even less to this thread than I do has felt it necessary to comment in this way.

I really enjoy keeping up with this and a few other threads, but this puts me off as I'm sure it must others noting how quiet it's been recently, so back to lurkdurm for me.:(

Take care and stay safe everyone.

Keeping busy and Have not noticed the cold today.Just looked at the energy monitor and it is reading 16.5 C in the front room.

This afternoon, i have been sorting through my recycled material bag. Ok a pillowcase full of old sheets/ clothes made from poly cotton.
I seem to go through crafting phrases. finnished the knitting one after knitting many cardigans, big and small.
Now back into sewing and have made many little zipped bags, fully lined.
my latest is what you would call peg bags on coat hangers.Lined and with zips. can be hung in wardrobes or surprise, surprised as a peg bag.
I give many of my craft items away as gifts/ HM pressants.

Last Autumn I knitted hot water bottle covers.

Preparing for the cold today = shut curtains around 4pm when it gos dark.
Waring my long sleeved thermal vest. Fleesy trousers and slipper boots.
Filled my hot water bottle last night and may do so tonight.
Just going to cook the dinner.
    CH comes on at 5.30pm.
Have a warm cosy evening everyone.
The secret to success is making very small, yet constant changes.:)

Would anybody know if wrapping expensive meat in newspaper inside the freezer would help it keep cold in a power cut?

Pooky- that all sounds splendid and I'm liking your "ladyjug" addition to the car preps. Much better to do it in the car and then dispose rather than freeze you b*tt outside:rotfl:
Must see if I can get a cheap one when I next charityshop.
    Thanks for that top tip.

A little more expensive but looks like it could be worth it is the sheewee! They are on amazon for around £7. Google if you haven't heard of them before :rotfl:

Traditionally on OS we mostly try to ignore people who upset others. Not always possible of course. Some people just like to cause upset and those particular people stop bothering if we don't react ;)

Please don't disappear back to lurkdom. You said nothing wrong.
  • Yes. I'm off also.

I don't need the agro. 2015 for me is a new beginning.

I am coming our of lurkdom to say.....Please come back everyone, the thread is big enough for everyone -I do not have time to post often on the forums, but find that reading the threads is inspiring. especially when I am struggling or feeling depressed by the mess around me/ lack of money/the cold weather. Please can this thread continue to be a place where we can come for advice and share ideas that work? Lighting tea lights this evening and hoping that it will help warm the sitting room(not sitting, but am keeping moving and busy as it is so chilly and I am already wearing a maximum amount of woolies!!!) mental note to self to get/knit another jumper.
:xmastree: still adding dangly bits to the xmas tree. And my daughter has just phoned to say she is visiting later on tonight....lovely time of year!
  • DS1 had cross country today, so I said it was a good thing I'd put his base layers in his PE bag- no because he didn't wear them, they just made his bag more crowded. Clearly, this PE was more cross than country!

Anyway, he's got them, & warm waterproof boots, & I've got new boots. When I've done 4 or 5 miles on pavement a day, 5 days a week, cheap boots just don't last more than one winter.

DS1 got muffs for his motorbike, like these, http://www.getgeared.co.uk/OXFORD_Deluxe_Motorcycle_Handlebar_Muffs (in case, you, like me, didn't know what motorbike muffs are :-D ), & is going to have the windscreen replaced with a bigger one. He's also put the top box back on rather than taking a smaller bag, & put emergency rations in the box. It's funny, he laughs at me for prepping, but it does sink in!
  • We can't ignore the weather, it's a fact of life that we will get some, like it or loath it the population have always talked about the weather and always will. Neither of the posts was a weather prediction or anything like it, just commenting on what the weather forecasts on the TV said, at least where I was watching. It's not forbidden to mention the weather is it? or did I miss a directive earlier on? No harm done, please don't leave us you two, we all NEED each other when it comes to being prepared for anything to share and act on new ideas and useful information shared. Peace on the thread please, all of us?
  • We are not allowed to talk about this as it upsets some people.

We're not allowed to talk about the weather & possible predictions on a preparing for winter discussion.....interesting!

Felt much colder this morning & had to give the car a good scrape before heading off to work. Couldn't even open the back door to put my bag in had to put it in the boot! Some nasty weather forecast for wednesday, will keep an eye on that but not on any long day's this week so should be home with the heating on by 6 everyday.

Have we discussed the best place to buy pillar candles? I've used a few of my stash up recently so could do with getting a few in to replace. Large ones were 2 for £5 in asda and b&q had 4 medium ones for £8. Will check how much they are in Ikea these days & maybe plan a trip there before christmas.
