Apparently a lot of cats have died in the Nottinghamshire region in the past couple of years due to drinking from garden water features that had antifreeze added. There is talk of a campaign to get Bitrex added to antifreeze to make it less attractive to small mammals. Hope this happens, because my two mogs often drink from our garden fountain.

My moggie always drinks from anything she can grab outside, although she has fresh water inside twice daily!!

I found out when she was little that she would not drink water from a standard cat bowl or dish, but always has some from a clear drinking glass!! So she has her own 2 glasses, which slightly come out at the top, so she can get her head in more easily!

But...will still drink from a water feature, or puddle outside!!

Thanks for the info regarding antifreeze, it's not something I would do anyway really.

It's cold & damp outside and I'm in my PJ's already!!

  • We've had this one for a long time and his work is second to none. He has a super team working with him so he's worth waiting for. We were a bit worried in case he'd got a problem of some kind but I guess he's been, as usual, very busy. When you find a craftsman as good as Simon you stay loyal!

    Just reposting this:
P.S The new T*sco magazine (The one with the white cake on the cover) has a voucher in the back for 75p off Covent Garden soup. Some flavours are half price at the moment so it goes down to 42p a carton. Hope that helps someone xxx
With huge thanks to SDG3100 - I did this today and bought four cartons for the freezer. It's good soup, and will be hugely useful when the weather gets colder. Amazing price ... One tip - if you want to go for several (or more!) take a little pair of scissors with you to cut the vouchers out, as the checkouts need them separately to go in the till. The soup voucher is at the back of the magazine, on the last page but one. I think the half price offer lasts until the 9th, so get in there.

Perishing here this morning, any ideas on keeping the birdbath from freezing over?
So jealous of all your snuggly cats. I love them but am allergic
I've used a large empty pickle jar with a nightlight in with some success when it's really cold. (Break the ice on top and make sure it's safely sited) They burn for quite a long time and I'm sure the birds enjoy their warmish bath!:)

It went really cold yesterday so I am putting the CH on a bit more at midday as we are both @ home.

When I make a hot drink I hold the cup to gain some extra heat.

I made a vegetarian casserole in the slow cooker yesterday with dumplings. We are having the leftover half today with sausages.

Oh has just gone out to walk the dog. I reminded him, hat, scarf and gloves.

Cold today and as I work from home I'm trying to minimise heating without making it too cold to work! So when I do put the heating on, I take the thermostat into my office (smallest room) and turn the radiator right up - the rest of the house then just gets minimal heating.

Made courgette soup in the thermal bag today, so I had a hot meal ready for lunchtime, plus the nice cooking smells all morning. I'm about to put tonight's meal in the bag too. A brisk (VERY brisk) walk is on the cards too, so I can warm up before sitting down to work again and put off the moment when I have to turn the heating on.

Tomorrow I'll be making beetroot soup from some lovely homegrown beetroots very kindly given to me by a friend :)

Found an old pingpong ball and put that in last night but we didnt have a frost so will have to wait and see if it works. Thanks for the suggestion.

Has anybody got the mousemesh covers for over airbricks? I was thinking of getting some as we have little woodmice in the garden and I don't want them getting in the house through the winter.

I am thinking of getting my hot water bottle out = added heat.

I knitted covers for hot water bottles last Christmas. I had 6 and gave most away to thankful friends and family.
