Almost sounds like a "lifestyle choice" (am obviously watching too much american tv).

The only thing that is vetoed is the Blue Stripe toilet roll which caused a mutiny!

I know exactly what you mean. My other half told me the other day that there was no point in me buying it because he uses masses of it on purpose so I will stop buying the stuff. Stubborn or what?

Well my thoughts on it are if you cannot tell a difference in quality then go for the cheaper option.

We do most of our shopping at aldi/lidl and save on what we were paying at Sainsburys. If people want to spend stupid amounts on shopping just to have a bit of packaging with a name on it (cause thats all your paying extra for in most cases) then let them.

The best way to switch to value brands/aldi/lidl is simply do a shop getting the value ranges. Do not tell the family and see over the course of the week if you get any negetive comments from the family regarding the meals. You know you are eating value so your judgement may be clouded but they dont. If you notice a negetive difference simply switch back the following week to branded stuff. It cannot hurt to try it once.
Hi there! We’ve had to remove your signature. It was so good we removed it because we cannot think of one so good as you had and need to protect others from seeing such a great signature.

I hate to write this and gawd knows I am against consumerist brainwashing but my mum once bought an economy brand of cornflakes when I was a kid (20 yrs ago!) and my sister and I really didn't like the taste. They weren't as well toasted IIRC. My mum swore she couldn't tell the difference but despite wanting to please our mum, the cornflakes had to be drenched in melted chocolate and placed in fairy cake cases before we'd finish them

Anyway, put them in a plain container and hopefully it is just the packaging they're responding to so you can keep your food bill down! ;)

Some cheap brands are great, others are crap but, 100%, if people know it is cheap they will not be able to make an objective judgement so blind taste test all the way. What with the credit crunch though I would seriously look into renting your kids out or even selling them.
And if, you know, your history...

I agree with Dixie Dean - my children said the value rice pops were yak - they were  even the hens wouldn't touch them

I'll add this to the existing thread on Tesco Value snobbery.

Hi all. The only time I decant cheap items into other containers is to disguise them so the kids and OH at least try them instead of just slating them because they are cheap. I used to get the golden nuggetty type cereals-the brand name variety (can't remember the brand now) but 1 day i decided to try the cheaper supermarket version-nearly half the price i was paying. I decanted them into a cereal container and none of them noticed anything-so after they had all eaten I joyfully announced they had been duped and they were still pretty impressed, though they admitted that if they had known beforehand they would never have tried them. So most of my shopping is the cheaper brand stuff. I still use bold 2 in 1 washpowder though and I add some value stuff to make it go further. I like my nescafe gold blend...so if anyone knows a cheap alternative that tastes similar please. I also like tetley tea bags-some of the cheaper ones I can tell straight away.
But I don't hide what I've bought becasue of pride. I just think how much more I have bought for the money -and it does exactly what it says on the tin/pack-value.

    this is brilliant!

I am definately a tesco value snob because i dont want to have loads of blue stripe in my trolley because i dont want to feel / look / appear "poor".

i hate myself for being like this but found a great way round it...

order everything online and hey presto...cheap stuff, delivered and no bad feelings!

(maybe i should just stop being a snob but this way i think its win win?)

I am so not bothered about Tesco / Asda branded cheap / stripy items.

I regularly buy - corn, bread, peas, beans, lasagna sheets, pasta, jaffa cakes, fish, cheese although I am considered well off I would rather be MSE and sensible about shopping but have looked at it so much closer since I joined this forum.

I am moving back to the UK in September and have had a brilliant year out at our house in Spain but I am worried about all increasing costs and having 3 children and all that entails cost wise.I have been able to eat well on less than my family allowance for the last 3 months. So we will have to see the implications once I'm back home.

We have no mortgage or utility bills except Sky and Tel calls and motoring costs from Sept - January 2008 so will be frugal although we have 2 1/2 fulltime wages and OH may get a pt job as he is on resettlement doing nada in this period.

I love the menu planning and can move the meals about the month without problem.I will still shop every other day in UK as the kids will have packed lunches due to cost implications and I am looking forward to getting my slow cooker out ( how exciting )

I will still bake cakes and biscuits weekly and my OH is particularly fond of bakewell tart and the kids love HM Pizza and Twinks ( you gotta love her )

Stardrops and white vinegar are my next trial ,I have them but back in UK.
