  • have no problem at all buying cheaper ingredients from aldi / lidl, the quality can be superb (know of an italian restauranter who uses lidl passata as topping for his pizzas) but do have a problem buying value goods - usually i'm disappointed in the quality, particularly thinking of tescos tomatos, tasted so strongly of vinegar (acetic acid)m i had to throw a whole batch of ragu away - absolutely gutted)
also love buying twins - my tin cupboard looks like noahs ark - bogoffs of course, stock up when its something you use regularly whether it be dishwasher tablets or tuna

    all the best

Slightly off topic, but, I just don't shop at Tesco because they are the most expensive supermarket :confused:

Tesco comes out cheapest for me. We have a lidl but I can't get to it and I wouldn't be able to get everything I need if I shopped at Netto on its own.

This is a really interesting discussion.

I have been known to put value handwash into posh branded handwash bottles, but it is impossible to hide that lurid blue colour!

My sister used to be a bit of a brand snob. She is not so much anymore. One time, she bought me some virgin vie handwash which was lovely. However, when I had finished with it I refilled it with tesco value (yes lurid blue) stuff. The only reason for this was that it was a really slim bottle and was the only one I could find to fit inbetween the two taps in my downstairs toilet (small sink). She came out saying how beautiful it smelled (the handwash that is) and how she loved how soft it made her hands feel. Oh what a glorious moment that was!!!!
  • Had to post quickly. Was in Tesco today getting a few bits as fiance had been paid. I was in the freezer aisle and heard to rather posh ladies discussing chips - "oh they have the value ones ha ha ha", "oh no, I dont think we will bother with them haha", just as I reached over and grabbed a bag and added it to my basket of value sausages, value fish, value scampi and value orange juice hehe! I am not proud in the slightest - I revel in getting a bargain, especially when the quality is just as good, like with the scampi (absolutely deliciuos)

I don't mind using value products. Will try any of them once and if I don't like it will move up to the next cheapest. I don't care who knows it, I eat well and am losing weight so I am happy with that.

I have converted OH to accept value brands as he grew up on branded everything so was a bit of a value snob but he has now seen sense!!

My kids call me the value queen!! They know when shopping with me that we only buy blue and white lables!!
But when the kids turn to me at the checkout and say wow mum that was a really good shop look at how much we got, it make me feel proud that im not forcing them in to a branded world.
I love all the value items iv tried, and i have tried most of them, the fish portions are lovely bacon, mince, biscuits, yoghurts, bread, air freshners, washing up liquid is only 13p and is so thick and last ages.

I cant see the point in buying branded product when the value are just as good and a heck of alot cheaper, and as for hiding the fact no way i like telling people how cheaply i shop, and my bbqs never get any complaints value burgers ,sausage, cobs, chicken the works.

    Value=more money for treats/days out/hoildays ect

i buy mostly value... always look a picture when i do a big shop in sainsburys with my parents (i dont drive) and my whole trolley is virtually "basics" apart from some of the fruit and veg....My only exceptions are:
    • The rare items where they dont do a value version -things like soya mince
    • Where things are reduced making them cheaper than value version
    • Mince beef and branded tea bags - dont like value versions of either.
    • Perishable items where the value version is tooooo much for one person and i know i wont use most of it before having to bin it AND there is a smaller "one person" size version in say the supermarkets own brand label - where i will be able to use it all (so no waste) AND it has to cost less than the larger value item!! (COMPLICATED RULE THAT ONE :rotfl: )
People laugh at me... specially as one of my brand new kitchen cupboards come off the wall few weeks ago  (stupid friend of a kitchen fitter fitted it on lath plaster 6ft in the air!!) So im a cupboard shortmeaning everything was moved about and i had to put stuff out of there into my "storecupboard". So all my "spare" tins etc are now in stacker boxes till he can come back and fit a new cupboard..

Problem is the only place i had to store them which was out of the way is a shelf in my hallway directly opposite the front door... so when you come in my house your faced with stacker boxes of "value" products so i cant be ashamed as everyone sees it! :rotfl: :rotfl:

My ex on other hand now buys all supermarket own brand or branded goods... which REALLY annoys me cos when we lived together he ate value products noooo problem and always marvelled at how cheap i managed to shop... but now i dont live there anymore the freezer is full of ready meals again and the expensive branded stuff has re-appeared... even though hes in more dire straits than me with money (25k debt!) ... and he moans his food is just not lasting him and its costing him a fortune!

I blame that on his mothers influence thoughcos she wouldnt be seen dead with a value tin... but will gladly shop in B+M and home and bargain ! :rotfl: (probably cos they are branded tins!) ....She also is the one sending "food parcels" of ready meals when hes skint.... and the rubbish in them flares up his skin conditions and im sure are not helping his nutrition problems he has either.. !!! grr!!! (sorry hate the woman.... think hyacinth bucket in keeping up appearences!) So im trying to convince him to go back to value... cos its just as good and ive found in many cases contains less rubbish!! :T
