Spent £11.18 today, which includes beer. YS finds were tomatoes, double cream, bread and mixed spice. I'm still wondering whether A*di made a mistake reducing the mixed spice to 9p.

I made Jack Monroe's vegetarian chilli last night, using a couple of chillies from the plant on the windowsill. I must have some tiny cracks in the skin of my fingers, because my fingers felt like they were on fire afterwards. I ended up clutching an iceblock from the freezer for most of the evening. The chilli was good though. Next time I chop chillies, I'm wearing plastic gloves.

Ouch! I tend to snip chillies using scissors directly into what I am cooking, means you are only touching the stalk part of the chilli. Hope this helps for next time.
That voice in your head that says you can’t do this is a LIAR!

Spent £78.97 this week, on an Ocado delivery (I had a £20 off an £80 shop voucher code) and some bits at Aldi and Lidl. This leaves the final Christmas bits (and a few routine things that we are running out of) and the meat for Xmas day still to buy - I MIGHT just stay within my budget :D This will probably involve a small 'cheat' - I have about £20 worth of Nectar points which I will also use up :o

My challenge ends on the 26th Dec, having started on 22 Nov. A bit more than a month, but I allowed a generous budget to allow for this, plus the extras for Christmas and to feed numerous visitors, MUCH more than I would spend in any other month.
  • Hi,

Just bought a sack of potatoes and a massive tray of bramleys £1 for £6 in total. Have updated my signature.

I would be delighted but I then went to Boots and spent £52 on a lovely gift, I do not need and for someone I have already bought for. Stupid me. I will try to contain myself and keep it for her birthday in November. Will makeup keep to November?

    Am very cross with myself.

  • I've actually got a little lost this month. Need to find receipts and do a proper update, one has gone missing I absentmindedly gave it to DH and it got binned it was around £8 something so going to round it up to £9

    Lets see:

    16/12 £8.54
    17/12 £9.00
    18/12 £6.90

Leaves me £40 until Weds, now I should be able to do this but I feel

  • Hi everyone,

Just popping to make a quick update. Spends so far for December on grocery challenge is £240. For us, this isn't too bad. I have lots of stuff in the freezer now as well as lots of store-cupboard ingredients. I am hoping January can be a frugal month.

Our Christmas food spending is allocated to a different budget. I am expecting this to be quite high as we are buying a large turkey from our local butcher and are feeding quite a lot of people. But that's all budgeted for and I think we will come in under budget.

Actually, I am feeling quite good about how everything's going for December. :T

£17 spend today. Got 4 YS packs of 200g beef for 90p each, 2 red peppers YS at 21p each, a pack of fresh egg noodles for 25p YS, a chicken & sweetcorn soup 50p YS, a pack of asparagus tips & a pack of baby sweetcorn both YS 30p each. A pack of YS trifles & a luxury yoghurt both for pennies.A stew pack for 35p YS. I then made a beef stirfry out of 2 of the packs & have reserved one for beef stew. I froze the last one. The £17 also included a bottle of red wine as we had the in laws staying & a bottle of ginger beer. Have enough food for a couple of days now I'd say.
