Should we feel guilty in opening up bank accounts simply for the incentives?

Recently, I've opened with Halifax, Co-op, M&S, Yorkshire.

It's a lot of work for staff on the phone, they have to send out lots of paperwork, do their checks, print out debit cards, set up internet access, etc, etc

It must cost them more in the processing than the incentives we get...negative overall value in systems' terms?

Once banks stop 'playing the game' then so will I. If my bank offered me £150 to stay with them I might be inclined to show a bit more loyalty.
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort

Good grief, that's 29 minutes of my life gone for good. I was thoroughly grilled on all aspects of my finances. Her answer to everything was 'Fantastic'. It was like wading through glue. Why they can't have an online application process I don't know. The things an MSEr will put up with for £150.

When were you last paid £150 (after tax) for 29 minutes work?

I had a call from the advisor of my local branch who said she had asked head office if it was OK to open a Clydesdale and Yorkshire Bank Direct accounts and be eligible for the £150 and the interest on both accounts, she said they had said it was OK.

So I applied for the Clydesdale account, after completing the long application I was asked the final question,” do you have any current accounts with Clydesdale or Yorkshire Banks”, I said I had opened a YB one yesterday, he said it wasn’t possible to open two direct accounts and that Clydesdale and Yorkshire Banks are under the same umbrella as one company and it has never been the case that two accounts could be opened in sole names.

He is checking back with the local advisor to ascertain what has happened and is to get back to me, but it does seem to be the case that no one is going to get two accounts in sole names to double up on the incentive switch.

Clydesdale and Yorkshire Bank are the same company, just as Cooperative Bank and Smile are.

From personal experience, I can confirm that when I tried to open a Current Account Direct (back in the days where it was paying 4%) with both, I was successful initially, but within a day of the second account being opened, they had closed it! So they use the same systems and can see what accounts you have across the brands (akin to HBOS - Halifax and Bank of Scotland).

The terms of the Current Account Direct make it clear that you can only have one sole and one joint (that applies across CB and YB). What is less clear is their policy on having current accounts under both brands. I've been told it's not possible but if you had a Clydesdale current account and walked into a YB branch to open a different current account, I can't see any problems.

However, there's not a chance of anyone getting the incentive with both brands as they're the same bank - just like you won't get the incentive with both Co-op and Smile by switching to a Co-op account and a Smile account as they're both the Co-op.

    Failing that, I used 0800 2346550 successfully.

For those like me that have to pay for Freephone calls I got through on 0141-951-7315 and account all setup
