Be careful saying a second income - I was grilled on what type of work it was, who was paying me, what kind of payment it would be each month.

I also set up an account for my lodgers payment/expenses and I had to give the type of payment that would be, amount and his full name!

Sorry to quote myself :D just off the phone with CB and was advised I was eligible for all accounts. Went with the Direct as my first one. Is it best to wait until I get some paperwork (i.e. with my customer no. etc) before I apply for account number 2 (and 3 and 4 and so on!) or could I just go ahead tonight and ring to open more? Any thoughts?

Just for my own peace of mind, I asked if the £1000 had to be deposited as a lump sum - he said it could be made up of smaller amounts as long as it totalled £1000 and was within the time period.

Thanks to all for your help.

There is no need to wait - they will have a record on screen of your previous application.

Once you have a current account direct the next one most go for is a current account plus - which is the standard free account and doesn't pay interest. However while you can only have 1 sole direct account you can in theory have as many plus accounts as you want. If you get bored with the plus account you can ask for a readycash account - their basic cash account. There are two others - control and signature but they have monthly fees.

Have a reason ready and source of funds e.g. going to transfer in salary or savings and will be using it to paying bills/work expenses etc etc.

As for the £1k - you have 31 days from your switch date to pay in it (either as one sum or as many as instalments you like). But the sooner you pay in the full £1k - the sooner you get your £150 - and you can withdraw some/all of it immediately. However I would not recommend that if you are making several applications after opening accounts already - as they might like to see some activity on your existing accounts before agreeing to open others. Just depends who you get on the phone as well - most are very nice at CB/YB but you can get an unhelpful person on occasion.

PS Don't forget your First Trust bank application - their £125 incentive could end at anytime so as an NI resident I would encourage you to go to them as well asap. You can report back to tell us if they are nicer to people with an Ulster accent than they are to some English callers!:D:D

Both me and oh got our incentive today. Seemed a long time coming compared to other switches but then it is a bigger amount so I suppose you have a work a little harder!

He told me they have been told in the office that the offer is being extended for another month beyond the current 28th Feb date.

I opened an account recently. I rang up earlier this week as I still hadn't received the paperwork until today and the agent also told me the switching offer had been extended until 31 March so I needn't worry if I hadn't received any paperwork by the end of this month.

The switching Ts and Cs sent to me by post and the information on their website still indicates 28 Feb..........

I'm not sure what you're comparing it with? Granted, FD is quick...a good bit less than the quoted 28 days. And Halifax is 3 days or so. But the rest will be about the same or longer than the 33-34 days YB/CB are taking won't they?...Nationwide RAF up to 7 weeks! Co-op 45 days. M&S a calendar month.

Did you during any/all of your applications get asked why you needed SO many accounts?
    Not so directly, no.
and what reasons do you give for opening the accounts.
There are many reasons on this thread, including some of mine. Should give you some food for thought.
After that I've run out of donor accounts unless I use my Santander 123 .....
RBS (and so presumably NatWest) is quick. TSB isn't so bad. Why not a Santander Everyday account?

Does anyone have the full freepost address for the Timor House address? I've had a letter from both YB and CB saying I forgot to return the signed mandate despite not sending me one in the first place. It says to sign the one with the letter and send back in the enclosed freepost envelope. Guess what - there's no envelope in either letter! I suppose they are consistant! :p

The return address on the letter is:

    Direct Banking
    Timor House
    Mariner Court
    Clydebank
    Clydebank Business Park
    G81 2NR

Is there a freepost code I can tack to the beginning of this to avoid having to go out and buy some stamps?
