Getting ready,
Waterproof , if they struggle to find shelter, is more important than warm. A waterproof later will allow body heat to build up.
Too heavy /thick a coat can make an outside animal COLDER research shows. Your chap won't be able to carry a full wardrobe for his dog to cater for different weather so I'd opt for something VERY well fitting!( most important...rubs from something uncomfortable will be magnified as he'll be wearing it more ) and not go as 'warm' as you can over something the dog can wear from autumn right through to spring and that is light enough to still let his coat 'stare' when it needs to.0 -
This one seems quite good as it covers the tummy and is adjustable. Even if it was a bit long, it could be tightened up around the neck.

If you can't measure the actual dog you wish to buy it for, you could try putting a call out to members here for some idea of the size of their Staffies - I knit dog jumpers to raise funds for a dog rescue and often have to ask for help with different breed measurements to prevent spoiling a surprise lol.
I know Staffies are a breed that vary quite a bit, but hopefully you'll get a few measurements and you already know what size is too small.
Such a kind thought and I'm sure it will be appreciated.

What a lovely gesture.
We bought this for our staffie in a large size.

Originally my wife questioned that it may be too big but because they are a muscular breed it was just the right size. Particularly as they have a large chest. That said ours was slightly tall for a staff but I'm not sure he is much wider.
The coat covers much of the stomach too but not totally.
This is what it may look like on, I love it.Looks just like our Melvin.

Might I suggest a piece of vetbed for dog (and owner) to sit on/sleep on? Something like this :- http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/like/231180197495?limghlpsr=true&hlpv=2&ops=true&viphx=1&hlpht=true&lpid=108&chn=ps&device=c&adtype=pla&crdt=0&ff3=1&ff11=ICEP3.0.0-L&ff12=67&ff13=80&ff14=108&ff19=00

I'd 2nd something like the above
I had a waterproof coat made for Ben after he was recovering from illness & getting on in years
It was made by the person who used to make our horse rugs - of the same material (waterproof outside & quilted inside) and closed with velcro fastenings
Absolutely brilliant
This looks really cosy with the belly wrap

(quite a good selection available from them - I've used Robinson's loads when I had the horses & always had good service from them)Grocery Challenge £211/£455 (01/01-31/03)
2016 Sell: £125/£250
£1,000 Emergency Fund Challenge #78 £3.96 / £1,000Vet Fund: £410.93 / £1,000
Debt free & determined to stay that way!0 -
Thanks everyone for all the suggestions.
Looked at all and I see I have to measure the dog or will be buying/returning till spring.
Will just carry the tape measure with me and do it when I see them next time as I do not see them every day.
Will update, thanks again xx0 -
Haven't read the whole thread so maybe it's been suggested, but this seller on ebay does loads of jackets and hoodies for Staffies and they've got a 100% rating. This one for example is £14 with free postage
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FLEECE-HOODY-COAT-FOR-STAFFIE-OR-EBT-/121472128172
It's a good idea too because Staffies suffer from extremes of temperature.0 -
I second the vet bed as it stays dry on top. If the dog is out in the rain or snow it won't get a chance to dry properly and it can't be good for the dog to spend hours in a wet hoodie. They take ages to dry and sounds like the man is unlikely to have access to drying facilities.
Very thoughtful and considerate of you getting ready, many just walk on by.If you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you always got!0 -

It looks to me like it has a double zip underneath in the third photo.

I think it's lovely that you're helping this man and his dog0
