Coat for a staffie living outside with a homeless guy - advice pls

There is a homeless man with a 13 yo staffie often sitting outside the station near my work.

I have been helping them a bit over the last 8 months but with winter coming - would like to get a warm jacket for the dog. He is old, around 13 and lives outside with the owner. Often wrapped up in a blanket but a jacket would be better.

I ordered one from TKmax, arrived yesterday but it was no good, too small and not elastic anywhere so can not imagine it would be comfy, gave back just now.

Looked on Amazon but all I see are jackets to keep the dogs warm/dry while on a walkie - they do not cover the belly or legs at all.

Can anyone recommend a jacket (links pls) that can be delivered fast (amazon or zooplus) and would fit a staffie - and keep staffie warm and dry in this weather not just on his back but his belly etc?

I have no idea about sizes for this breed as I am a larger dog person myself... But this little boy is old and jacket would help him in a winter - I am happy to pay for one but want to make the right choice.

Thanks a lot xx

  • Unfortunately I don't know anything about dog coats, but I just wanted to say that I am really taken with your post and am really pleased that there are kind people in this world. I'm sure this man is grateful for your help and thoughts, whatever his reason for being on the streets. I wish there were more people like you.

To echo the above - what a lovely gesture. The world would be a nicer place if we all took a moment to do something this kind.

There looks to be a good range on here - https://fetch.co.uk/dogs/dog-travel/coats/keep-warm-coats

    Thanks, every little helps xx

He finds it hard to get accommodation as nobody wants t take him in with the dog so they live rough but together.

As I said, dog is old and deserves to at least be fed and be warm.

As they have nowhere to live, they can not carry much around with them all the time. I help with whatever I can whenever I can as they sit outside station and there is Sainsbury next to station too so easy to pop in and get some things for them when I see them.

Dog likes pig ears, tripe sticks etc. Gavin gets some cash.

I really want to get a jacket for the dog and soon...

If anyone with staffie can advise? I have no idea what size he is - just a standard staffie.

Al jackets I look at are s/m/l/xl but do not say what dog roughly would they fit..

Amazon not a problem as can return and get money back fast - Zooplus not so, never returned anything to them but imagine it would take a while so need to get it right..

Thanks if anyone can advise xx

A purebred staffy will be either a medium or large but the problem is that each company differs in their sizing. The best way is to measure the dog from the base of his neck, where his collar is, to the base of his tail. There's plenty available on Amazon but you'll not find many that cover the legs as well. I have seen pyjama type fleeces but they're not designed to be worn for long, for obvious reasons! Some will cover most of their neck and part of their chest/belly so these may be more suitable.

As others have said, it's lovely to hear of someone showing kindness like this.

Don't know how much you'd be happy paying but this range of coats are brilliant. Very warm and cover the belly too.

I've not seen a coat that would cover all the dog, except as someone else said the pj type ones that are novelty rather than functional.
You can get dog boots (amazon or pet shops) that are waterproof, maybe a set of them along with a waterproof coat would do the trick but would be pricey.
Maybe it would be worth asking on your local freecycle or FB giveaway pages if someone has one they no longer need, or someone who could make one for him with a waterproof cover & a blanket inner or from an old wax coat.
Thank you for caring about the dog & I hope you can find something to keep him snug.

try ebay for dog boots/waterproof shoes - although I am not sure how safe they are for dogs as the have a lot of sweat glands in their feet, so not sure if it throws off their temperature ...

any of the staffie rescue centres, or Battersea dogs home, might be able to give you advice about the size of coat

how about a fleece blanket? they are often really warm. they can be picked up anywhere, Asda do some decent ones, so do Tesco sometimes.

thank you for caring. it is really nice to read a heartwarming story on here! hope you find something suitable.

These keep our westie's belly warm and dry. I don't know what size would fit a staffie though. Westie wears a small so maybe L/XL.
