Just catching up 🤗 love the gorgeous cat pics 😍
As you've got a hearth I'd go with the picture idea for now like you have done but perhaps a portrait one so it fits the hearth. Is there a possibility of removing the hearth at some point and making a bit more floor space? If so I'd fill the hole in then and just make it good.

It’s currently all a work of progress in my head! I’m now thinking about keeping the hearth & getting an electric fire. Will continue to ponder!

Obviously you're not spending money in March but apparently wil-ko is good for cheaper decent quality stick on tiles, and now I'm seriously considering buying a ton of them for the kitchen in the build instead of the expense of backsplash tiles. You're a bad influence 😂
