Some relatives had a space like yours. They rested a large mirror against the wall, decorated it with fairy lights and had candles and decorative items on the hearth around it. It looked really nice. They now have an electric wood burning style stove there, which I think they use with the light more than the heat.

I've got a picture very similar to that in my bathroom. It lights up. We have an electric fake log burner in the space where we had a gas fire removed in the dining room. It's not really used for heat just the effect.
I get knocked down but I get up again (Chumbawamba, Tubthumping)2 -
