    I'm just back from holidays and read 80 posts to catch up. I agree a log-burner or multi-fuel stove would be a burden very quickly, but you can get some very attractive gas fires that look like a stove (and others that look like an open fire) - and some have remote controls too, if that is what you desire, but not cheap and would need professional installation and all-in, no change from £1000.

    I make use of a small moveable electric convector heater when I don't want to heat the whole house and we use a couple of oil filled radiators under the desk (between the knees) and in the bathroom, to delay turning the heating on. We do have a wood-burning stove but we live in the country, and seasoned wood is easily stored and obtained. 

    My Mum's just had a serious fall (she's 92) and I think her hearing getting worse seems to be affecting her balance, she isn't happy about it. I really empathise. I find a hot water bottle or two under a blanket work for me (along with a little helper snuggling up) and lots of hot drinks
