Hi Beanie
I use a heated throw, they are a bit it like an electric blanket but are designed to use directly over you as a fleecy throw with the added benefit that you can turn them on. I have a cosy home one from qcv(but they are available else where), mine is a full length throw but you can also get ones that are designed to wrap around your shoulders like a shawl.
They generally have a 90 minute and 9hour setting with difference heat levels and you can unplug then and the blanket part which can be washed in the washing machine. I find it invaluable.
As I am out of the house most of the day plus live on my own so it seem pointless to put on heating to heat up rooms plus my house has not been updated it is still single glazing and all the radiators under under the window sills so I am just pay to heat up this wood the only one that is of benefit to me is the one in my bathroom. And I would need to take time of work to get if fixed when my landlord got round to getting it sorted. I still have an old gas fire and baksi boiler, the gas engineer came out a couple of months ago to do a service. I told him my hot water worked but the heating didn't he took one look found a small leak and said he wasn't event going to bother servicing it and was going to condemn it and speak to landlord about fitting a new combi boiler, I am still waiting to hear back!!
This is similar to the one I have

but the one below is on qvc just now it is a blanket but can be converted into a cape and is portable so you can walk around with it on using rechargeable batteries
