Thank you for the replies - particularly the HSE document.
Fortunately he's not expected to suffer any long term effects :) what a trouper, but is far more wary of the vets now.

I did consider contacting Travel Insurance and letting them deal with it but really I think it's fairly cut and dry that she should take the responsibility....

I would expect a holiday cottage owner to be required to have public liability insurance, and that they would pay any costs you have incurred. Do the T&Cs for the booking mention this?

My own vet suggests that owners drop in if they're in the area/passing and will give the pets some treats so they associate good things with the vets rather than only bad things.

    Maybe worth considering?

Personally I wouldn't buqqer about with anything other than an immediate Letter Before Action with a claim for vet's fees, travel costs, any out of pocket expenses and distress and alarm experienced by dog and owners.
Many mangistrates are dog owners ;)

It does seem to work. Or at least mines pull to get into back into the vets lol. Usually gets a few giggles from pet owners who have had to coax their own pets in.

Have to say they're a good vet generally. Even their prices are good - can get worming and flea treatment for same price you can online.

Echo what everyone else is saying - the owner has neglected her duty of care and you should pursue this. So sorry about your dog but relieved to hear he is doing better - and have a hug!
  • I just wanted to say that I'm really glad your dog is ok :)

  • I'm wondering if the solicitor will advise her to pay but get you to sign a gagging order

A gagging order? Never seen one of those for covering expenses. Non-expense compensation, maybe. But not for this.
One important thing to remember is that when you get to the end of this sentence, you'll realise it's just my sig.
