Am I being unreasonable? Teenager's untidy room
Comments
-
Yes, very common behaviour, even into the early 20s!
Mine are at uni now, (both daughters,) and the bedrooms are spotless of course. But I lost count of the amount of times I had to go on about their bedrooms. They weren't as bad as my best friend's 3 daughter's bedrooms, which often has 3 week old bits of pizza in there, and used ST's!!!
But this is because I used to clean and tidy the rooms for them.
Unfortunately OP, you need to either
a) suck it up, shut the door, and leave it.
OR
b) regularly clean it when she isn't there.
Not much choice really, as many teens are the same.

I was a very untidy, and and my bedroom was a sh*t-tip, from about 11/12 y.o to about 18.0 -
Are you sure you didn't go through that wardrobe door, OP, and emerge in my son's bedroom because that's what his looks like most of the time?Make £25 a day in April £0/£750 (March £584, February £602, January £883.66)

Carrot and stick. Internet turned off, things go missing they like they soon tidy up to find them
If they ask anything say you cannot hear them a bit like when they ignore tidying your room by x day.
Instead of nagging for cups and plates say Can you help me the dishwasher is nearly full have you got anything that can go in now. I have found modifying how i ask something is bearing fruit. I use the same tactic with clothes. I also tell them how much I appreciate things when they do them. Makes them feel good so more likely to do it again. that is the theory anyway.
I do want them to start doing their own clothes now so I am doing an idiot guide to the washing machine.
Daughter had taken bedding off her bed but had not put clean on i went in gave her a hug and she looked at me weird then i said now make you f***ing bed. I never swear normally she got the point and did her bedding right away.0 -

I have to say that my two have been at times untidy throughout their teenage years but as long as nothing is going mouldy or smells, I just shut the door as what I cant see doesn't bother me.
They are both improving with age! One is 21 the other 19.
Should have seen my eldest move when I held her favourite rabbit (toy one, I hasten to add!) out of the window by his ears and said 'One more move and the rabbit gets it'. Never seem toys picked up so fast!0 -
When my DDs room got too messy and digusting, instead of shutting the door, I took the door off, This horrified her so much, she couldn't tidy up fast enough.
Now the threat that 3 days hence the door will be removed is usually enough, but as she is now 22 the tidiness is noticeably improving generally.
Good luck

We were never allowed food or plates upstairs, beyond a cup of tea. As an adult I still won't take food into bedrooms. Plates go in the kitchen and the lounge / dining room and that is all.
However, my mum kept the house very clean and tidy, even our bedrooms. We had no opportunity to be messy, everywhere got tidied up. Now I have my own home, I am the complete opposite. It's my house and my mess. My dad walked in my room once and gave me the ultimatum , either the room is tidy in three days or the lot goes down the chute ( we lived in a tower block at the time) , three days later he kept his word ! , clothes , games, college work etc etc . and yes It done the trick .0

My DD at 22 is still bad, she's been away at uni for 3 years but moved back in July and is just as untidy as ever! She's working this weekend and I know I will clean up but I do realise I'm obsessively tidy whereas she has much lower standards. Mugs, plates, glasses etc have to be brought down or she's sent back up!“I tell you, we are here on Earth to fart around, and don't let anybody tell you different.”
