it could well be the outlet pipe that is causing the smell ,if it has a kink or bend in it then the dirty water can just sit in it and become stagnent.

Hi
Just wondered if anyone knew if it was possible to make a dishwasher cleaner? The ones you can buy, which I can only find one brand are quite pricey, but I'm not sure if you can make your own or buy any cheaper? I'd rather if possible use something natural or environmentally friendly?
Thanks

A cup of good old white vinegar does the trick!0

I am in the same boat as you, But we do break the tablets in half when using them that way they lats a lot longer and still the dishes are clean, also look at the reduced section for dishwasher tablets etc. I often get ones which are in damaged boxes for alot cheaperIf I have been helpful - Hit the Thanks button0

Hi
thanks, although it was more the actual cleaning of the dishwasher I was after. In saying that it would be good if you could make your own dishwasher powder or tablets too. I would go for ecover ones but it's more expensive, since I buy stores own brand tablets to start with.

Great I have tons of the stuff.. use it all over the place, but wasn't sure if you could use it in the dishwasher.
Would you use it as a dishwasher cleaner? ie: run a dishwasher cycle? and where would you put the vinegar.. sorry to sound so dim!
Thanks

Not at all - I wasn't very specific was I? I just pop a cup full of it upright in the top rack, run a cycle and wait for it to do it's magic!0

We have an older thread on cleaning a dishwasher that should help you so I've merged your thread with it as it helps to keep all the suggestions together.

I run mine through with a cup of vinegar on the bottom shelf once a month on the hottest setting it does. Seems to do the trick
I alternate between fabric softner and vinegar in the WM too which seems to keep it lovelly and limescale free
Only reason I am using fabric condition is because OH bought a load from the reduced shelf at Mr T lol!!! He's well enough trained to know I won't buy fabric conditioner as it overpriced and I prefer essential oil and vinegar
But he figured it was a bargain so bought me 3 bottles of it bless him
Thank goodness we like the smell of this one

I just run my dishwasher on a full cycle empty with a tablet in it. It comes up nice and clean. Might try vinegar next time though just to see if it's any better0
