I'm getting old and grumpy - pet hate!

I must admit to being one of the ignorant ones who went to a PT and wanted to "tone up". I looked in the mirror one day and was disgusted at my gut so decided I had to change. My exact words to my PT were "I don't feel I particularly need to lose weight, I just want rid of my gut"
What I think puts people off (and makes them start using "tone") is that not everyone wants massive arms, massive chest or a six pack. To me toning up is, for example, getting a flat stomach which requires burning fat. Now I understand that that in order to burn fat you need to build up muscle but I don't class what I wanted to do as proper muscle building. I would suggest that toning up is a part of the muscle building process, perhaps also a consequence of the process but I do think there is a difference and a credible way of describing a goal.
Anyway, I'm by no means an expert but just felt like throwing my tuppance worth in.0 -
My pet hate is at the Hydro Suite.
Some fat, sweaty, overweight slob comes in, ignores the showers, and plonks himself in the Jacuzzi to share his body detritus with total strangers.
I never go near the Jacuzzi nowadays.

Just to add my thoughts - as a long time 'toner upper' who has never seen what I do as muscle building.
I'm 54, I'm reasonably healthy, but several pregnancies, middle age and an abdominal hysterectomy have taken their toll on my stomach muscles. I would like to tone them up a bit.
I wouldn't look at marketing that appeared to be aimed at body building - not something I would be 'into' (visions of protein shakes and women with biceps in teeny weeny bikinis). I would be beaten before I begin.
I am interested in Pilates, aerobics, a bit of gentle stretching - hell, I'm even doing couch to 5k.
How's this for a definition -
toning = going from flabby to 'normal'
building muscle = going from 'normal' to ripped.
I think that's probably how non-professionals see it.No longer a spouse, or trailing, but MSE won't allow me to change my username...0 -

As an overweight 60 something with new knee and other joint problems I go swimming and to 2 aquaerobics classes a week. My chiropractor asked me if I had lost a lot of weight as I looked so much better. No I haven't but my whole body feels better and more toned (I will now hide behind a chair to dodge the brickbats:D).
I hadn't realised that there is no such thing as being toned, so thank you for this. My pet hate by the way is people who talk all the way through the aqua class.0 -

Oh lordy yes! Especially when you're new and trying to listen to the instructor!!
We get them in the gym as well - the ones who have the treadmills at 2.5kph or just stand on the crosstrainers barely moving but natter ALL the time...

What is all this about? I have done exercise classes for 20 odd years and its only recently that I have come across people who talk at the same time as the instructor, all the way through the class. It is so rude and so annoying for anyone who is trying to do it properly.
And yes when I was into running it was the constant "how far do you run, how fast do you go, have you done a marathon" that used to irritate me. I exercise for me, not to prove anything to anyone else.0 -
My pet hate is people (ok women) wearing way too much perfume when they go swimming.
I am taking big gulps of air when I am swimming and I don't need to smell other people's perfume.
I know perfumes are sometimes worn to hide other smells, but if you are swimming surely you have had a shower beforehand?0 -

I must admit that it it is the competitive aspect of exercise that puts me off. I really couldn't care less how my performance compares to anyone else's.
I'm lucky enough to have a bit of space for a gym at home that I only have to share my wife. Suits me fine.0 -
I hate these apps people want to shove in your face ! The ones that tell you how far, how high, fastest and average speed etc when you are cycling. They even show you the map where they have been. Then they want to show the video from the helmet cam !
I enjoy popping out on my bike for a cheeky ride, it's for my enjoyment ....... well it was before I fell off and broke my wrist.
