I think a lot of lay people understand "toning" to mean firming up a bit, losing that jiggle, something that a lot of women want. If you use the words "building muscle" (even though it's technically correct), they freak out, think you intend to turn them into a hulking great monster, and you lose the sale. The PT knows better, but for advertising they have to use language that their customers will relate to. PT can of course then educate them a bit, once they have them in the gym.
Ive just finished my level 3 PT course and done my first set of flyers, I didn't use the words toning or toning up, my bro is also a PT, he doesn't use toning on his website or facebook page either.
Id just feel ridiculous advertising to get clients in on something that really doesn't exist and something that's bandied about enough to try and get clients into classes.
Also, some PTs I know who are very well educated sell stuff like juice plus and herbalife just to make money, because that stuff is a load of old crap.
Its not always about trying to connect with the customer, as you say its about getting a sale, Id be compromising myself from day 1 if I used language in my publicity material that I don't believe in.0 -
VestanPance wrote: »That article illustrates exactly why the word toned exists. The images are all of women who are into body building and have rather masculine physics. That's not the beach body the "toned" aspirer is often trying to attain.
People looking to be "toned" generally want to drop the fat and not build muscle. Dropping the fat is what really gives them that definition.
That article is preaching to the converted. Build muscle and be strong and healthy, but it fails in that what its trying to sell isn't what many want. Its like a running article telling people who have no interest in running to go run a marathon to show how healthy you are and how much stamina you have for endurance events.
The article completely misses the point if it's attempting to reach an audience that isn't already body building minded.
Oh, I don't think it is, its hidden away on the womens section of bodybuilding.com. I was just bringing it to the attention of HBS because I know she's into that sort of thing.
You sort of said it yourself there though. Women who want to 'tone up' aren't looking to change their muscle tone at all, they're looking to lose weight. Imagining you can 'tone' your muscles is daft.0 -
That article is rather good
thank you Buggly!
I particularly like the fact the author is blatantly eyerolling all the way through writing it

My pet hate, made me lose my temper last night at football training:
"It's only training" when I started to get upset the girls weren't running or basically doing anything in a small-sided practice match. That's why we're crap, no effort put in, whether in training or the matches.
I felt like saying, we train to get better, not worse!0 -
My pet hate is people dropping (deliberately) their weights after lifting. Last week some idiot dropped the bar and weights and a 20kg plate fell off the rack in the resulting thump to the floor and it landed less than half an inch from my foot. I get that sometimes there is no option, but normally I think if it is too heavy to take it to ground under your control, you shouldn't be lifting it!'Do not follow where the path may lead. I hate the 'Oh, what charity are you running it for?' question and the bemusement that I might run and not at least try to raise a little money for charity while doing it.
I run a race about every 6 weeks on average and I'd have no friends left if I asked for money every time. I don't expect people to raise money for charity every time they read a book/knit a sock/watch a whole boxset. Same thing.
And (proper grump mode on now) I am not running in your charity 5k because asking for sponsorship for something that I enjoy and do anyway, and which at 'not really a race' speeds is frankly less effort than getting out of bed in the morning, is taking the pee. I will give you a small donation or sponsor someone else who will actually be putting some real effort in. Leave it there.Saving for deposit: Finished! :j
House buying: Finished!
Next task: Lots and lots of DIY0 -
Mine at the moment, is being asked if I need help with kettlebells, by guys already in the free training section of my gym.
I reply with 'no I'm good but thanks' as they stand around tightening, belts, adjusting gloves, one guy sitting doing some sort of meditative breathing.
I then lift my bell, do my thing, get through my reps, clean the bell off, put it back (IN ORDER), and I get the 'wasnt expecting you to go for an 8kg, reckoned you for a 2kg BAHAHAHAHAHAHA!' and then 'I mean look at the size of you'.....
And they still haven't moved or lifted a foot, let alone a weight in the whole 25 minutes I've been there!
So really my pet peeve is people being overly concerned with what someone else is doing, mind your business, do your reps! Why pay £40 a month to watch others sweat!?Wealth is not measured by currency0 -

Agreed - I know that sometimes for Oly-style lifting the drop is part of the movement, but I'm fairly sure Oly gyms have the equipment/flooring/mats for that. It's ruined the platforms in our gymI saw one guy try to squat more than he could even get on his shoulers properly, got to demi-plie, and let the bar roll off backwards! Madness!

This is a pet hate of mine as well. Yes, I do endurance sports. No, I don't have a sad story, I'm not doing it in fancy dress or doing it for a charity.
See also that London isn't the only marathon on the planet. The marathon is a set distance. There are various distances for triathlon events.0
