My pet hate is people (usually women) that say

"I dont use free weights because I dont want to get huge, I use machines beause I want to be toned"

    This exactly.

    HBS x
"I believe in ordinary acts of bravery, in the courage that drives one person to stand up for another."

"It's easy to know what you're against, quite another to know what you're for."

Don't have a problem with using the word 'toned' at all. I started weight training in the 80's and it was a term used then (probably ages before that!) and has now become part of everyday language.

Not having trained in a gym for over 10 years I have lately been thinking about going back to 'tone' up my muscles back to what they used to look like (muscle memory) - it's not about building or burning fat at all.

E.T.A. I also don't have a problem with anyone being old and grumpy - you go girl !

Back when I did weights, I got peeved at the so&so's who left the kit configured for 6'6 hulky thoughtless folk & then chuckled as I'd clamber up the damn frame to adjust it for my considerably lesser scale.

Although I did enjoy adjusting the seat and then kicking the same weight as the fell runners. (For a fraction of the time, but it didn't take long for their eyes to bulge.)

Now, after every session I feel great, until the next morning: at which point old & grumpy understates the case by several paragraphs.

Things similar to this do pee me off.

My example would be people leaving a couple hundred lbs of weight on a bar. This is inconsiderate to anyone, no matter what their size.

I always use an empty bar for a "warm up" set.
It doesn't matter what i can "lift" the fact is i, and everyone else, have to tidy up after them.

Likewise, if you've used a set of dumbells, put them back on the rack. don't leave them chucked in the middle of the floor.

I also get somewhat irritated by "lads" arseing about with weight that could do them serious harm (which probably does show how old and grumpy i am) :D

My pet peeve (and one of the reasons I left my last gym and bought my own weights) was that at my last gym the free weights section was pretty limited. It only had a few benches so if you were wanting to get on the weights as I did you had to be fairly quick to get to a bench as there were usually a few other people watching for a bench to be free. I'd get on, do my sets and get out the way for someone else to use it. It always felt like you were being rushed.

This was bad enough without a group of young lads who joined and then spent all their time hanging around the benches while not actually using them for anything other than sitting down to talk to each other or to put their drinks bottles on while they conversed.

Being a polite soul I'd often ask if they were using the benches and they'd always say they were even when they clearly weren't. This was the case pretty much every time I asked.

After a number of weeks struggling to get sessions on the weights I decided enough was enough. I cancelled my membership and bought a good quality bench, a couple of bars/dumbbells and a load of weight plates. Now I can focus more on my form than on how long I've got left before I feel pressured to let someone else have a go

    Dictionary.com:-

    tone in Medicine:
    tone (tōn)
    n.

The quality or character of sound.

The character of voice expressing an emotion.

The normal state of elastic tension or partial contraction in resting muscles.

Normal firmness of a tissue or an organ.

It would seem that it's a perfectly valid term.

Exactly... I'm not sure why it upsets the OP so much. After all, it seems to be a well-understood way of expressing a desire to have a firm body but without being visibly muscly.
Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks
On a rotating plate, with spikes like Flash Gordon
And you're Peter Duncan; I gave you fair warning

My pet hate is people (ok women) wearing way too much perfume when they go swimming.
I am taking big gulps of air when I am swimming and I don't need to smell other people's perfume.
I know perfumes are sometimes worn to hide other smells, but if you are swimming surely you have had a shower beforehand?

I've never had this, thankfully. I do shower before I swim. I tend to swim in the morning (it's just easier) and don't bother putting any deodorant on until I've had my swim and shower. I'm sure there's a notice up asking us to a) shower before swimming and b) not to wear stuff like deodorant and perfume in the pool.

  • I have so many pet hates and didn't really know but reading this thread brought them all to surface:

    1. People who go to gyms only to sit on the exercise equipment and watching others working out and not letting other people use the equipment.

    2. People sitting on the exercise equipment, surfing the internet, chatting on their phones or with the person next to them.

    3. People who equate any of following with working out and fitness:
    - joining a gym that is paying to becoming a member but not using it
    - getting into trainers and tracksuits then walking around, shopping or visiting Starbucks
    - turning up at the gym and chatting up nice young staff at the reception
    - 1 and 2 above

I feel better already! Thank you for the opportunity
