    Hello.

I'm less than five feet tall and a size 22.

    I'm ball shaped.

I've been looking into gym membership. Again.

I always have good intentions, but have wasted money on memberships and not gone.

I can talk myself out of anything and this needs to stop.

The intention has always been to go home, pick up my gym gear and go out again to the gym.

Of course, once I go home, I don't go out again.

It would be harder for me to ignore the gym if I had to walk past it every time I go to and from work.

I'm out anyway, it's only an hour or two....

    So. Down to the question.

I work in one town and live in another.

Where I live, the local council's leisure centres are completely out of the way, one in an industrial estate and the other out of the town centre and awkward to get to.

The one in the town where I work is run down, looks dirty and puts me right off.

Now. There is a Pure Gym near to where I live and a Pure Gym near to where I work.

If I joined one, do I have to use just that one, or, once inducted, can I use any Pure Gym?

If someone is a member of a Pure Gym in say, Glasgow, could they use that membership in, say, Edinburgh?

ETA : I've joined. I've got the induction tomorrow.

The 'plan' such as it is, is to get into the habit of going - if that means popping in for a half hour on the treadmill then fine - it's more than I'm doing now.

Hopefully, I'll gain a bit more confidence, try a few things and, maybe get into some of the classes.

    Yeah......:o

I have really got to work on my self motivation.

If you don't like going to the gym, you should find an activity you prefer that helps you lose weight.
You need to find activities that you enjoy rather than continuing with ones you don't.
Doing things you don't like reinforces bad feelings about them.
You start thinking gym = bad therefore exercise = bad.
I was a stone overweight and hated the gym, so I started playing squash.
That's not a sport for everyone, but there are loads of others that do the same thing.
Find a sport you like and play against someone instead.
Then you're playing a game with a friend, rather than 'working out' in a gym.

I work a fairly nutty shift system and have no friends to play with.

I can't do anything by going on one evening/morning/afternoon a week at a particular time, as 2 weeks in every 4 I won't be able to make it.

That goes for line dancing, GCSE Maths and evening classes.

The thing about these 24/7/365 gyms is the convenience.

I'm doing it. I'm not liking it, but I'm doing it.

ETA : Squash? Round my way? Never!! Snooker maybe.....
 Don't know what I'm doing, but doing it anyway...

Sorry to hear that - especially about the lack of squash!
Sounds like your lifestyle makes fitness and weight-loss very difficult to achieve.
Really glad you are sticking with it though.
It'll definitely be worth it in the long run!
  • Delurking to say go you Gingernutty!

I finally developed an exercise habit 9 months before my wedding. Had been quite overweight since I was a teenager with a lifelong aversion to exercise but having a clear goal (toned arms for my wedding dress, flat tummy for my honeymoon bikini) really helped me.

Maybe you could set yourself a wee goal before fit camp, one for while you're there and one for immediately after? Really helps you to get through those last 5 burpees when your body in strongly advising you to desist immediately.

    ALx
  • If you're anything like my sister, the problem she has is she won't do as she's told. She always has to have her input and 'twist' on things. Except the 'twist' she ends up with because of it is that the scales go up rather than down.

Go regularly and do as you're told. Simple.
    I can't add up.

Yesterday, I found out about the hazards of going to the gym 'first thing', without breakfast.

I felt very light headed when I left the gym, felt a bit better in the fresh air, but on getting to the shopping centre, felt so nauseous that I had to find a toilet.

I was heaving long after I finished vomiting. It was awful.

Hypoglycaemia and dehydration. I'll have to look out for that again....

Today, once I finish work, I'll have breakfast and then go to the gym.

    That'll do it.
 Don't know what I'm doing, but doing it anyway...
  • Hi Gingernutty, I've been enjoying your updates! Very sorry to hear about the foof-injury <shudder> it's making mine twinge in sympathy.

I've had problems with motivation since my gym-buddy very rudely moved to a different city - we used to nag and bully and guilt each other into going! The only other incentive that seemed to really work was financial (we had to go 20 times within 8 weeks of joining to get the joining fee back! We knocked that out of the park)

The silly thing is, once I'm in the class I really enjoy it, and wonder why I don't do it more often, but the motivation of getting myself there is the tricky bit.

Anyway, I've found a new potential gym buddy and I'm wearing her down... she will join me! She will!

And not exactly on-topic but here you go anyway - when I joined I had a session with a personal trainer (didn't want one, but had to do it as part of the joining-fee-refund deal) - his opening gambit was "does your boyfriend mind you looking like that?" Charming....
I told him he was lucky to have me.
  • Have you considered exercising at home? You can get cross trainers, exercise bikes etc fairly cheap second hand or new, depending on how whizzy you want them. I love getting out and going to the gym but am very self conscious and often limited on time. Getting just a 2-in-1 cross trainer/bike was the best thing I could have done for my health. You can just hop on when you have some spare time or have a longer stretch in front of the TV at night. Good luck!

I need the discipline of lessons or I'd never get anything done.

    No TV either.

  • I'm a member at Pure Gym too and I have been since about February. I went maybe a total of 10 times in the first 6 months of the membership and was considering cancelling it. Then I had my "moment". I looked in the mirror and saw my belly flopping over my jeans.

Now, I've always been sporty, playing football, curling and the occasional tennis game, but I injured my knee quite badly when curling and I had to stop a lot of it. That moment I saw my gut in the mirror really hit home how much I'd let myself go and sparked a motivation in my mind.

My solution was to get myself a personal trainer. I just picked the guy from the website, e-mailed him and had a consultation. 6 weeks later I'm 2.5kg lighter, 2% body fat less and have gone from deadlifting 40kgs to 70kgs. I'm actually enjoying going to the gym now and though I'm not hiring the PT again until the New Year, I'm using my normal slot to go and work in the gym of my own accord.

Gingernutty, you're halfway there. Because you've had your "moment" (each time you get that feeling mid-class it's helping you remember what it's all for) it's now all about routine.

I'm subscribing to this thread as I'm routing for you to achieve your goals and if I get any advice from my PT, I'll be sure and share it.
