i'm not sure if my advice will be of any use, but the way i motivated myself going to the gym was simply to see my progress.

essentially, i treat it like a video game, except i'm leveling up in real life, and not in a virtual one. i go to the gym to train, and every few weeks/couple of months, i test my limits to see how much i've improved. sometimes i improve just barely, other times i see huge jumps. that feeling i get when i see a drastic improvement (for example, i hadn't improved in the bench press in a over 3 month, decided to change my routine, and BAM! broke through that plateau within a month) is SUCH a great feeling of accomplishment).

the key to my way of motivating myself was to keep meticulous track of my progress. i would also switch up different styles of training when it got too boring doing the same workout over and over again. for example, sometimes i would go for a long run, but if i got bored of it, i would do sprints and see if i can improve my sprint times and do that for a few weeks.

of course, not everyone treats it like a video game like myself, but you should find all the things you DO like about exercising, and use that to motivate yourself.

Do you use NerdFitness by any chance? :)

Well done for what you have achieved so far. I prefer classes just because they are more interesting, but the rower and cross trainer are alternatives to the treadmill and bike for cardio.

Try and avoid eating more because you have earnt it and good luck keep it up!

  • I have been using the myfitnesspal app and I think thats good for making sure I don't over eat. Also a handsome personal trainer makes getting up early for the gym a bit easier ;)

I love things like the Beginners Bodyweight Workout and the Angry Birds workout :) and there are some amazing success stories.

Mind though, they push the Paleo diet heavily but I'm a believer in doing what works for you :)

Hello Gingernutty, your posts made me smile, it is like being from a different planet using the gym and being overweight isn't it? I know because I am there too, I'm also a size 22, a tad taller but with the added bonus of it not being made up of a generous portion of leg length so I have the legs of someone much shorter.
It is very hard to walk into the gym and eye the odd equipment not knowing if is was left over from the Spanish Inquisition or not.
I booked a session (for a one off fee) with a trainer to work out a plan, in which he showed me how to use the equipment and worked out the quietest time of the day to go, which being early morning is fine for me because I can trick myself into thinking I am going to work before my brain is awake enough to do anything about it.
I also have a mantra which if you can find one works, mine is 'get it done' as it does get easier, but don't beat yourself up too much about missing sessions (as long as you go back at some point) as changing up, and down your routine helps fool the body into losing more weight.

Me too. A large head, long back and stumpy little arms and legs - like a stretched out dwarf.

I don't quite know what's got into me but

    I've..

    I've..

    signeduptoafatcamp.

    There. Said it.

I've signed up to seven nights at a fat camp which is about five miles from the nearest town and chocolate bar.

    I go in two weeks.

And there's kettlebells and belly dancing......

    Lawdelpus.
 Don't know what I'm doing, but doing it anyway...
  • Kettlebells are amazing :) I hope the camp is good!

@ gingernutty wow, brilliant you brave lady! well done it will be a great leap in the right direction, hope you have a good laugh to it always helps! I am debating getting a bike, to safe on travel and to get fit as it's daft to live so close to work and not bike it...am looking for a second hand one so it doesn't get purloined and trying not to imagine myself mud splattered in a ditch somewhere....good luck with the fit camp!:T

In the last couple of days I've discovered I can't hop anymore.

    Seriously.

I bounce like a wet sponge.

The Fit class is torture, centred around a set of lime green monkey bars with bits attached.

I throw like a girl - the medicine ball went everywhere.

It's possible to strain your groin. My foof hurts.

    I don't feel brave.

Part way through any class, an awful feeling washes over me. I can't believe I've let myself get to this state.

I want that to change. This fit camp may be the booster I need. Of it could be a complete disaster.
 Don't know what I'm doing, but doing it anyway...
