Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move discussions from the MoneySaving boards if they’re not related to MoneySaving to help everyone find the MoneySaving tips and discussion quicker (please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to Discussion Time/The Arms. If you have any questions about this policy please email abuse@moneysavingexpert.com.10 Dec 2007 - Led Zeppelin - I was there. :j :cool2: I wear my 50 (gold/red/white) blood donations pin badge with pride. Depends what you want. DVLA have their own website where you can look for what you want. I believe the cost there includes the assignment fee. If you want to disguise the age of your car you need an Ulster plate, which is dateless. You cannot put a plate on your car which is newer than the car itself.
You can buy from a private dealer. The assignment fee is usually extra. It is £80. Every time you transfer it to another car the £80 is payable. If you sell the car but keep the plate but don't put it straight on to another vehicle, you can keep it 'on retention' which is an extra £25. Many of the plates bought privately are on retention. You can of course sell the vehicle with the plate on if you wish.
If you sell a car and not the plate, it usually reverts to its original number, so keep the plates. The transfer process actually works very well. They always seem very quick and efficient. They issue new registration documents, tax discs and MOT certificates as part of the service, all included in the £80 fee.0 -

If you search on the Motoring and Public Transport board you'll find 6 or so threads discussing the costs and ins and outs of personalised number plates.0

Best bet for a good investment / nice plate at a bargain price is normally a DVLA auction. Check them out here: http://www.dvla-som.co.uk/home/en/Auction/Can I help?0

My wife amd I each have one IIRC they cost about £250 each, all in (unless you go for something right fancy) and then DVLA will stiny you for about £80 when you change your car.
A word to the wise, look to DVLA first, they hold most of the plates, t'other guys buy them from DVLA and then slap on their margin.

personalised number plates look so tackyA banker is a fellow who lends you his umbrella when the sun is shining and wants it back the minute it begins to rain.0

I think the tacky plates are those (not just cherished/memorable ones) where Chavs have used illegal fonts, mis-spaced letters etc. I'm waiting for the day the day the local police pulls their finger out and has a blitz on them
I saw a really nasty one today it was something like a88 y** - it had been mis-spaced to a88y and the self important git then had their name Abby Bates or suchlike in small print on the plate0
