I sold £200 plate for about £700, dealer took about £100 commision,all the big reg firms on the internet will give you a estimate price free and contact you when they get an offer ,they deal with everything all you do is sign forms and go and buy the new number plate for your car with the number dvla give you.
They also help with changing your tax disc ,etc to the new number.
I would reccomend them as they get the money from buyer up front and the buyer cannot back out

When i have transfered or sold my numbers, I have always got given by the dvla a replacement number same year as the car original but never the same original number.
You can put your private number on retention and sell it when you want, the dvla will then give your car an age related number, but as others said you would have to ask them about getting back the original number.
