Love it! I took a decent camera into work hoping to catch it, but....nope.

I was thinking back to 1999 and thinking how I'd never been aware of any while growing up, so checked past dates - and there's not been one in my lifetime prior to that.
In fact, there aren't many anywhere much. 2090 (or so) for the next biggie0 -

Well, (touch wood, not tempting the fate of a 'refer' and 'resubmission'), I have finally finished my course. :j
Yay! Well done Yorkie! :beer: :j :beer:I remember the '99 one as being quite dramatic. This one, meh.
We were dead lucky! :j Woke to a wonderful sunrise, then discovered OH forgot to bring the milk from home so he rushed off to the shop for some for our first cuppa tea of the day. By time he got home eclipse had just started. So we had tea and toast and marmalade out on the deck while looking at the sun every few minutes. I began tidying up the pots too. Really chuffed to find the French tarragon survived the winter too. :j
So in and out after breakfast, bit chilly to sit out the whole time. But once the sun was about half covered it started getting really chilly, and a mist rose too. But we had a clear view to within about 5 minutes of the very end when the clouds blew over from the northwest. OH took the glasses over to our neighbours too, he was astonished and said he'd never seen anything like it in his lifetime.
The 1999 one we were here too, had quite an eclipse party, with OH's parents and a couple of friends too. It was cloudy, but just about when the eclipse was deepest the clouds thinned enough for me to take photos, and we did the pinhole camera thing, but that wasn't particularly successful!
There are some spectacular photos on Twitter of today's eclipse, including a wonderful one of the Liver Bird with the partly eclipsed sun beside it. OH took some photos by putting his glasses over the lens of his camera. Couldn't do that with mine as the lens too wide.
Having a bit of a rest now after all the excitement and gardening. But planning to get out after Doctors (my secret vice!)and chop the buddlieas severely, provided we don't get pouring rain.

Question for the scientists
Why do spuds weigh less after steaming? I'd have thought they might weigh more as they've got water added, but I took just under 500g of spud and steamed it and weighed it and it was under 400g
Where did the spud go?0 -

During heating they actually lose water (comes out as it gets hotter).
Hence stabbing them before cooking to let the pressure out.Have my first business premises (+4th business) 01/11/2017

Guess from a non-expert in potato matters (or pretty much anything, come to that).
Steam is hot and highly water-based. Both these conditions are really good at breaking up cells (which contain a lot of water, but also lots of salts/ other stuff, so pure water will flow into the cell by osmosis). So some/ lots of the cells lyse, meaning the contents of the cells are released. There is lots of heat around so the contents (esp. the water) also evaporate.
