Seems like everybody's a bit of a loon and hiding it ... until I came out and said it :)

Sorry you've all got your issues, but it's making me feel less of a loon knowing it's not just me :)

I have a couple of odd things. Not saying because michaels will post up pictures of one of them. It genuinely doesn't touch my life ( unless I tell people who think its funny to tease :rotfl:) so its not a problem. I don't even know why its a problem. Probably some childhood experience I've blocked out.:D

I don't like going down hills very much, I get a sort of going in a lift feeling in my stomach. That's a bit odd, because you have to go down hills. I just accept I feel odder than the situation deserves. Its slightly more awkward when I hurt more because walking down hills can be more uncomfortable. But its not just that, I used to dislike riding down hills, and hate the kind of cross country jumps that go down hill. In fact, I've been lucky enough to have opportunity to ride around a couple of good course on closed days, and I've jumped some of the steps etc back to front:o to avoid going down hill ( which you could never do on an open day...). I swear I really only don't like jumping because of the landing phase. The taking off and going over is actually fine, the size of a jump going up to it doesn't put be off ever, until I think about the landing ( the down hill bit) :)

Yes, most people have their own special loon-ness. As others have pointed out, it's when it has such a big impact on your life that it is important to do something about it.

I can easily think of two Nikkster loon things - I'm sure there are more!

Why do the smallest cars have the most problems, ok the fixes are usually cheaper than they would be on the bigger cars, but everything that can go wrong does. On a per mile driven basis the Aygo costs more.

Rattled its way to the garage, exhaust about to fall off :(

PN would it help you at all to have smoke alarms? Lots of them. One in each room. Would that give you some reassurance?

You obviously have these phobias, as do we all, and I am wondering whether you can work round them to some extent, rather than confronting them head on?
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

Are small cars more 'value engineered'?

there's no deep fat fryer EVER in my home!

My BiL is starting up a bar with his gf and so had to buy the standard business/liability insurance.

The biggest 2 variables to impact on the price of the insurance are:

    - Do you want to insure your cash? If yes then you pay a huge surcharge and need to be robbed twice a year to make it worthwhile.
    - Do you have a deep fat fryer? If no then the price of insurance doubles, presumably because they assume you will make chips anyway but in a chip pan.

Hope you manage to sort your phobias out. I suspect that realising that they're irrational is the first part of resolving them. I'm not good at all with heights but have always forced myself to confront that, sometimes with some quite disastrous results. Now I feel the need to show a good face for the kids I'm much better with it. The roller coaster I went on the other day would have been blimmin' terrifying for someone scared of heights but I breezed it.

If it helps PN for me to admit it, I am also dead scared of heights. On the one hand, that's perfectly sane, but it's also quite debilitating. I absolutely hate roller coasters, for example. Having the kids around makes my fear of heights far worse, as I worry about them falling.

Not IME. Small cars carry the same brand as the big ones after all and so being rubbish carries the same risk of brand damage.

I've driven all sizes of Toyota and found them all to be built to the same standard: mechanically very high. What you don't get in little cars is toys and comfort. The seats in our little Yaris are pretty solid and it doesn't have much in the way of toys.

It runs like a dream though. 50,000kms and the only thing that went wrong was the airbag. I might have gotten a little annoyed when moving house and punched the steering wheel a few times causing the airbag to engage partially. Whoops.

I can't speak for other brands though. Other companies might make their cheaper cars crappier.

I force myself to get over it. Ditto with dogs. I've developed a fear of dogs as a result of being bitten several times (first 2 times was having dogs set on me so the attacks came before the fear).

Now I just kinda man up when all I really want to do is cower so that the kids don't develop my irrational fears.

I sometimes do my John Travolta routine in the kitchen squeaking "Ah, ha, ha, ha, stayin' alive, stayin' alive. Ah, ha, ha, ha, stayin' aliiiiiiiiiiiiiiiive!!" , but that doesn't mean I'm a loon, does it? :o
