I don't know about bandwidth, but it uses a lot of battery. I had the phone on a back-up charging unit at the same time as using it as a sat-nav, the battery level was still dropping, so it was using up at a faster rate than it was being recharged. The phone also got hot.

Mine is the same. I can only use it for walking for a little while. In the car I always plug it into the 12V socket when using it as a satnav.

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

I do use satnav but also always like to look at the map on google before setting off and if it is local I generally try to get away with looking and remembering only falling back on the phone if that fails.

Tbh I don't suppose the vents ever put out air above the high 20s which I suspect won't be a problem for the phone.

I wish I could do rides without getting motion sickness, even at legoland I can only do a couple before sitting it out.

I checked the spec on one phone. Max working temp is 35C, max storage temp is 45C. Given that it's over 35C where Gen is at the moment and he's not complained about his phone, there's probably a bit of leeway in those figures. I wouldn't have thought the electronics would have a problem at those sorts of temperatures, but maybe batteries are more sensitive?

When you say the stem is cleaned, do you mean free from rust and free from mud? Mine is rusted all along its length. If yours has no sign of rust, I would suspect it is a new one. After all, they have all been in the same muddy moat for 3 months. In the moat the poppies were of varying lengths, yet all the sticks will fit in the boxes, so some of the sticks must have been cut or replaced. Lucky you.

I hadn't thought of that - yes, of course some must have been replaced. I think, though, that if the stem had been rusty, OH would have wanted to leave it like that :)

I much prefer maps to satnavs, because with a map I can see where I am, where I've been, and where I'm going. But as Lydia says there is no time to do that whilst driving.

Well done, what in? Are you a rocket scientist, or did you do meejah studyz?

    :)

I guess it's mostly just me and Sue here now without one. Who else doesn't have a degree/higher?

Me! Circumstances at the time when I was doing O Levels meant I didn't get good enough results to go on to A Levels. So I went to work instead.

I started studying for an Open Degree with the OU a few years ago, and was doing well and really enjoying it, but then needed to go on some medication which for some reason rendered me incapable of putting an essay together coherently. I just couldn't think. So I had to withdraw from my course.

I got more used to the meds in the end, but by then the system had changed and I'd have had to take out a student loan.

I'm glad now that I didn't go back to studying, as I have a lot more trouble retrieving information from my brain now, so I'd have zero chance of passing an exam :p

    ETA Congratulations to Tom

Me too. I left school with French and English :)
Then I got about four more at College.
Then I did a random A level 15 years later.

I'd never have been able to do the Job I ended up doing, without (now) having a Degree, completed a Graduate Training scheme, and passed Professional exams.

We'll presume it's a first class honours in rocket surgery from Oxbridge university, don't tell us any different.;)

Got one of the screen mounted cheapy phone holders that were reduced to clear at Mr Ts (mentioned on another thread here some time back). Wonder how much bandwidth it uses up if you use a phone as GPS with google maps? My payg deal costs 1p per Mb.

I had to go to inner London last week and I could have done with a human walking satnav for finding my way about near the Barbican. :(

The GPS chip in your phone operates independently of the GPRS network and if you turn off mobile data the GPS still works. I do that when skiing and using a tracker app to record distance and speed etc whilst not having to pay for data.

If you used google maps then it would still have to download the map but if you have it set to standard maps rather than satellite photos I don't think that is data intensive. Presumably you can get a satnav app which has the map already downloaded (which would also allow your phone to work as a satnav without being able to pick up the mobile network as long as it can see the satellites).

    Congrats Tom:beer:. What next?

No idea happy working from home as i have been for the past 5 years. Ironically doing what someone mentioned to you a few weeks back as a possible money making venture.

Computing. In reality it wont get me a job, degree's dont matter that much IMO. Really i got a piece of paper for what i mostly already knew, which is not necessarily a bad thing.

I'm not really sure what the minimum degree requirements were for my job. A degree or sufficient work experience I guess. My MSc definitely will have helped though ('right' subject and did a placement at my now place of work). Going through the motions of a PhD has definitely helped (I think very differently now), but the piece of paper is a nice to have rather than a necessity.
