Michaels, we're looking at you're suggestion tomorrow, not ruling anything out. If fir can look at old bangers I can look at brand new cars that will work out cheaper.

I'm wondering if it would ever be at all possible for is to lease and return.

We looked at buy rather than lease, there seemed to be a good reduction from about 30k to 25k if bought via a online broker.
    I think....

My Poppy arrived today! (Order number 215XXX) I haven't unwrapped the actual poppy yet, as it's Mr ivyleaf's Christmas present, but I feel slightly guilty that the stem of mine has been cleaned :o (i.e. it had already been cleaned before sending.) OH says that if it does have any mud on it, he'll let it stay there.

When you say the stem is cleaned, do you mean free from rust and free from mud? Mine is rusted all along its length. If yours has no sign of rust, I would suspect it is a new one. After all, they have all been in the same muddy moat for 3 months. In the moat the poppies were of varying lengths, yet all the sticks will fit in the boxes, so some of the sticks must have been cut or replaced. Lucky you.

I love broad beans, but OH does't like them, so we never have them.
You can still have them! If you lived alone you'd have them, so why not have a little portion just for yourself?

I hate broad beans. Nasty things they are.

Just posted this on the motoring board. Wondered if any of the NP have any suggestions? The staff in Halford's weren't able to help. :(

    Hi everyone.

I have a phone (a Samsung Galaxy Ace 2) with a satnav app that I like to use when driving. I need a holder to put the phone in when I'm doing this, but I'm having trouble finding a suitable one and I wondered if you people on this board might be able to help.

My car is an 08 reg Ford C-Max. The windscreen is a long way forward of the steering wheel. When I looked in Halford's today, all the holders that sucker to the windscreen had rather short connectors (6in or less) between the sucker and the holder. That's not long enough for the configuration of the C-Max.

I can't sucker anything to the dashboard itself, or stick it on with an adhesive pad, because the dashboard not only has a bumpy surface but is also curved. I've tried, but nothing sticks.

At present I have a holder that clips to the heating vent, but I'm sure that can't be good for winter driving because as soon as it gets cold and I put the heater on I am blasting hot air directly at the phone, which can't be good for it.

    Anybody got any suggestions please?

    Thanks in advance.

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

There appears to be a little triangular are of glass on the side in front of the drivers window. In the past I have had a suction holder that could be stuck to this area and the satnav adjusted so it is easy to look at - I prefer this to the people who stick theirs in the middle of the windscreen which I think must produce a small blind-spot to the left.

Oooh! That sounds like a promising idea. I'd just have to make sure I got one with a sufficiently adjustable swivel end, and I'm sure loads of them must do that. I'll investigate further when I have a spare moment - probably in a few days. Will let you all know how I get on.

Thanks michaels. I was hoping the NP would be able to help, but wasn't really expecting an idea with such potential so quickly. Belonging to the NP is cool. :D

A quarterlight one will only work if that bit of the window is fixed, how they used to be years ago. There's a small danger you'd forget it and open the window and it'd fall on the floor.

I've no idea what your dashboard looks like - a model name/year's not enough for me to Google it and know I've got the right one.

Could you get something like this? http://lowres.cartoonstock.com/transport-driver-driving-rear_view_mirrors-mirrors-cars-jza0083_low.jpg

Yes it's fixed. The car looks like this:

Except that mine is not that clean. :o

If michaels's idea works I will need to get a longer cable to power the phone from the 12V socket, but that shouldn't be too much of a problem. (The 12V socket doesn't seem to be there in the pic I've posted, but in my car it's in front of the cup holders that you can see in the pic between the places where the seatbelts clip into.)

Lydia, I have my phone on the windscreen, near to the mirror (in the middle of the car, on the passenger side)

Another option would be to find a holder that clips into the vents, or alternatively stick it over the rev counter (being closer to you than the screen) on a suction cup

    Hope this helps.

Lakeland used to do a sat nav bean bag. That might do it.
