Does Aus like the same mix of foreign foods we like in Britain? Serious question. I don't think any large village in the UK, no matter how remote is complete if it doesn't have the triumvirate of italian pizza place, curry takeaway and Chinese takeaway.
In the US, Mexican food seems to occupy the spicy niche that Indian does here. Curry houses were hard to find but marvellous.
In the Netherlands I see loads of Indonesian restaurants but not so many Indian ones or Chinese.
I think that's more about who is there to do the cooking, rather than what the people want. Ask Americans and thousands of them crave indians, but if the indians that live there don't want to open restaurants then it's not a reflection on Americans' tastes, but the availability/willingness of chefs to open restaurants.0 -
I have (very mostly) Good and Bad news.
Bad news: I can't start my bonfire of papers tonight
Good news: had a very nice email - supervisor will look over what I've sent, asked me to pester, said he is glad I'm settled (in my Monday email I'd said that I still felt overwhelmed by the writing, but that I could act like a normal person for most other things - have held down a job for 2yrs, pay mortgage on time, meet deadlines - sometimes even do things early and above expectations).
I will submit a thesis this year. I will.
this is good news all round. well done0 -

on the other hand you may love it and keep it forever.when dd was about aged 12 we stencilled a hunting scene around her bedroom. despite several redecorating episodes the stencil is still there as she refuses to have it painted over, horses, fences, hunting pink jackets, fences and a fox. way past its sell by date but still bl**dy there.0 -
One Masterchef UK contestant has done a private dinner party thing at her house - not suggesting that's right for Gen, but thought I'd mention it anyway:

My cats were pitaes last night. Mauve tried to sleep in some strange yoga position expecting my hand and the duvet to support her back all night and pink wanted to lie under the extra pillow I'd put there because of nose. I soon decided pillow was untenable but pink had made a sort of den and wanted the weight of my head on her for a sort of squashing pleasure so complained if I tried to move.
I'm meant to sleep upwards anyway as its meant to help my head, but it doesn't, they keep telling my living flat is when my head hurts worse but lying flat is when it feels BEST. If I could lie flat all the time I might lose the head ache, lol.
Anyway, I slept propped up, squashing pink and propping up mauve...who kept tapping my chin with an outstretched back foot.0 -
Oh poor lir! I was scratching my head over "pitaes", wondering what on earth autocorrect was on about this time, then realised you meant they'd been pains in the arris.
It doesn't sound as if you had the best night
I hope your nose will behave better today x 0 -

It was only last year that I finally decided a blouse I'd worn in 6th form (late 80s) from Dorothy Perkins was now too shabby round the cuffs to wear to work ...

Yesterday the jacket I wore to work was one that I bought for a job interview in 1993...lostinrates wrote: »Personally if I were going to buy a convenience meal I'd be buying vegetarian or vegan more often ( unless animal sources were labelled as friendly). Agree with lir about meat labelling. If you cook with meat that's outdoor reared or free range or otherwise from animals who've had a nice life, then make sure your labelling says so.PasturesNew wrote: »It says 95% of people install it themselves. I think I can safely say that even if they'd said 99.99% of people install it I know I'd still be the 0.01% that needed a little man
I probably am too. I know this is pathetic of me considering my qualifications and profession. TBH I'd be more scared of drilling the holes to mount the box on the wall than connecting up the wires.
Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. (Link permitted by forum team)
Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

arris.
Ooh, you've hit on a pet hate of mine: misuse of slang by native speakers.
Aris not arris.
Why?
Aris ==> Aristotle ==> Bottle ==> Bottle and glass ==> @r53
It should be Aris, capitalised. Or capitalized if you have a thing about the -ise/-ize use. And maybe that should be a semi-colon not a comma, I'm not great on semi-colons. **Sigh** English be hard.
No offence anyhoo, I mean it in the spirit of educating nice people everywhere.:D0 -

I live in the land of the barbie. Caterers exist but I suspect get thinner pickings here than in the UK.
A stack of sausages/steaks and a bunch of salads from the supermarket/deli.
Bung some beers/wine in a ice bucket and you're done.
Decide on the price as to which side of the '/' you're on!0
