As you say, if using the beans straight from a regular tin, they are fine and don't have those risks attached. I don't think I've ever bought dried beans / pulses etc as I don't trust myself to treat them safely (and, more to the point, am never sufficiently organised to think about this the night before ...).
I buy kidney beans in tins because they are easy and cheap and you can make salads with them at short notice too. I also buy flageolet beans in tins simply because I like them. Its like a sort of nursery food I guess, that texture of slightly pulpy bean. Oh, and hearts of palms.....i have tins of them about for salads.
Did anyone else have to eat tinned asparagus as a child? Asparagus roll sandwiches and tea parties and stuff. Shudder.0 -

Tinned is totally fine IIRC. They have to be boiled to death before canning. It's the dried /raw ones that are a problem. Got to wonder how hungry people must have originally been to get past the poison stage.There is no honour to be had in not knowing a thing that can be known - Danny Baker0 -
Tinned beans are fine anyway. I don't see the point in faffing around with the dried ones. Was actually thinking flageolet beans with the roast lamb tonight

Be careful with cooking kidney beans. Shared flat with a bunch of med students who slow-cooked a chili with unboiled undrained kidney beans. Couldn't get near the toilets all weekend for people throwing up (I'd missed the meal and dodged that bullet).
Even canned ones? I thought that was just the dried ones and that cans were OK as the toxins will have been killed in the manufacturing/cooking process.0 -

No, from when I was 11 or so we had it growing in the garden, so I'd pick a few spears (whatever was poking out that day) and cook them - they were self-set, so to be found in all sorts of random spots of the garden, rather than an actual bed of asparagus. They were served as "another hot vegetable on the plate of food, alonside whatever other hot veggies we had that day"
And .... tea parties .... never been to one0 -
I just popped out to sign up for the free kitchen contest, so name's in the hat ... although unlikely to be drawn
I also wandered into the "posh furniture shop" round the corner, took some random photos of bits and bobs - of course I never get mithered by sales staff as they don't approach me or offer to help even if I am looking for help anywhere.
Saw a nice "boat bookcase" - the sort of thing that's like cutting a rowing boat in half, then standing it up with the pointy bit at the ceiling. And this one had two drawers at the bottom ... cost an arm and a leg though. If I had that money and was after one I'd be looking for more of an authentic look, more rustic.... this was definitely made by master craftsmen in posh wood etc... it was quite like this one: http://www.trhayes.co.uk/toscana-boat-bookcase.html
I then came home and had two doughnuts for tea.... as the bag I bought had contained five, so they all needed eating by today. No more doughnuts left now.
Today's food's been: 2 pieces of toast; 2 apple doughnuts; 2 squares of mint crisp chocolate.0 -

That's just vile isn't it .... it looks like something that came out of a squat and needs scraping before it's sanitized and steam cleaned0 -
