I'm sure it would be cheaper for those cuts of meat which you would usually stew for a couple of hours in the oven.

One of the things it love abut having a cooker rather thana. Range is I love a good stew, rather than a casserole, for the same reasons I think, I don't get on with the slow cooker, even when I am doing nothing with it I feel more involved with a stove top stew?

E.g. Things like oxtail I cook twice.....on the hob. I don't know what other people do. But that's how i do it.

Oh, its been YEARS since I had oxtail! its so good.

Fir, who used to be really laid back, is getting really cross about a bag of potatoes RP bought and didn't put away ( and I left out because ...well, just did) and now they are green. ( silly, silly thing to get cross about, but it just shows we're tense and grouchy. Also RP was meant to be away all weekend and we had planned on that, doing labour yesterday and planning on today 'off' and RP has turned up with no ' hey, I'll be back today after all' warning. So....partly why we are tense and grouchy about green potatoes, :rotfl:

Situation with RP seems to be getting worse. All the articles on multi-generation living in The Sunday Times Homes section (and there is another one today) talk about open discussions about boundaries and behaviour.

Are you living in the same home together or are you living as 2 households under one roof?

I throuroughly agree that the way forward is open discussions about boundaries and behaviour in multigenerational living. :).

However, when one party is unable to maintain these boundaries for what ever reason things get trickier, and the redrawing of boundaries cannot be done, IMO, until we have concluded whether it is an 'unable' or an 'unwilling' or ...what.

Without knowing anything about your household, I do have some experience of an elderly lady with dementia. In retrospect, and hindsight is a wonderful thing, I can see that we failed to recognise "unable" and thought it was "unwilling". We spent an awful lot of time arguing about food, for example, when it would've been a lot kinder simply to let the old lady not eat.

I also feel quite strongly that the medics failed to tell us the truth in clear terms. Maybe, we did not want to hear, but mainly I think they did not want to spell it out.

Cook for ~8 hours on low or ~5 hours on high.

There are very few circumstances in which having to think about food 5 or 8 hours before wanting to eat it wouldn't feel like a huge hassle to me. I can see there are many people whose lifestyles are different from mine, though, for whom they're a great idea.

Only works if everyone involved has the mental capacity to have the discussions and stick to what's been agreed.

Well, that's what I had in mind to post - was just reading on down until I'd got 3 posts to multiquote - and then I saw lir had said much the same thing:

Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

Yes, you're right in that it doesn't suit all lifestyles.

There's no way I can be bothered to do it on the morning of the day I'm likely to eat it, if it's a workday. And I don't plan that far ahead anyway as a general rule.

When I do use mine, it's always at the weekend for eating that day, reheating on subsequent days, and/or freezing.

Thing is in most day to day capacities RP is still fine.

Socialising ok. Getting about ok. Has been to three social functions in Town this week for example, not sure why weekend plans have changed and won't be told, but that's just like RP.

Tbh, have wondered round and round in circles. As you all know. I've wondered if its ' simply' a mental Heath issue for example, maybe combined with an issue to do with an existing medication ( which is something the GP confirmed could be exacerbating.

RP will admit there is 'absent minded ness' but nothing more. But this is more.

I just can't quite put my finger on it.

I'll be focussing on one main aspect: no prep. Too many recipes want stuff prepping first - I mean specifically meat needing to be cooked in a frying pan before being put in. I want to : gather/chop/peel some stuff, lob it in, add liquid, walk away.

Be careful with cooking kidney beans. Shared flat with a bunch of med students who slow-cooked a chili with unboiled undrained kidney beans. Couldn't get near the toilets all weekend for people throwing up (I'd missed the meal and dodged that bullet).

I had no idea that beans are dangerous. WP says

Kidney beans are more toxic than most other bean varieties if not pre-soaked and subsequently heated to the boiling point for at least 10 minutes. The U.S Food and Drug Administration recommends boiling for 30 minutes to ensure they reach a sufficient temperature long enough to completely destroy the toxin.[2] However, cooking at the lower temperature of 80 °C (176 °F), such as in a slow cooker, can increase this danger and raise the toxin level up to fivefold.[3]

As you say, if using the beans straight from a regular tin, they are fine and don't have those risks attached. I don't think I've ever bought dried beans / pulses etc as I don't trust myself to treat them safely (and, more to the point, am never sufficiently organised to think about this the night before ...).
